Today I purchased some Supraheckt plywood
(for a song!they practicaly gave it to me  )
I picked up 10 @ 1/4" and 10 @ 3/8" .I hope
to use it for my first attempt at boat building.
A 20ft. sharpie.although I used to be a custom
cabinet builder I know little about marine ply.
I was hoping someone could educate me about this
particular(supraheckt)ply.ie pro's and con's
Thanks! Leon

Leon, I don't know about that particular brand, but in general marine ply, no matter what the species of wood, means the layers are glued with waterproof glue (resourcinal), the layers have no voids in them meaning no hollow spots inside, and the finish is good both sides. Hopefully you got a deal on good marine ply because the vendor wanted to move the inventory, but usually it's worth researching the source before buying.

Marine ply is also balanced, meaning the veneers are the same thickness and the number of plys is usually higher, for example 5-ply marine vs. 3-ply construction ply in 1/2" thickness.

Hello Leon,

I already replied this to your question in the Plans/Designs section, but if you were able to pick up Bruynzeel Suprahecht®, you are now the proud owner of the best Mahogany plywood in the world! The Suprahecht comes with 20 years warranty, provided the outer sides are properly covered to shut out water. Have a look at their website (http://www.bruynzeelmultipanel.com/). Unfortunately the English section is very limited, but they are not very active on the Web.

Mahogany is both heavier and stronger than Okoumé or Meranti. You will get some helluva-goodlooking boat! If I were you, I'd plan for a lot of brightwork. Since you're a cabinet maker, this wood probably is in very good hands... smile.gif
