View Full Version : Lawn Bunnys

So I'm about to go mow the lawn , barefoot no less smile.gif . I usually walk the grounds before mowing to pick up Lucky poop and check for stones. During the walk today I noticed this pile of fir and dug up ground. Upon closer inspection I noticed it was a nest of bunnies. I guess that's what that Rabbit was doing out there last night. Hmmm so now my wife wont let me mow and we have to start walking lucky

I've had fried rabbit, and it was tasty, but I couldn't eat it after a couple of bites. I don't know why - it tasted good, but every part looked like bunny! I'm not funny about that stuff, but no bunny rabbit for me. smile.gif Chicken, cow, deer, pig, even dove, but no rabbit!

If you even think of having your lovely daughter mow over those lovable little bunnies I'm going to get the full power of the Federal Gov. on your back, along with the SPCA and the EPA. In fact, I'm pretty sure those are the last of the wild Hudson Basin Bi-colored Bunnies, an endangered (to say the least ) species. Your yard will be declared off limits while we conduct an environmental impact study- no drinking, playing, or-.... heaven forbid!!! BBQ!!! (second hand smoke and all, ya know  ) Those bunnies will be saved!! :D :D

Remind me next time I find baby critters NOT to tell SWMBO. These baby bunnies have cause an enormous amount of stress in my life. If I let the dogs out to do there business I get a lecture about the bunnies. If I go out I get a lecture to check on the status of the bunnies. Its raining now so obviously she is concerned about the bunnies. She has been concerned about the bunnies mother so I put a twig over the nest to see if its disturbed, it was. She called me from work to check on the bunnies. Bunnies bunnies bunnies !!!!!!!! its driving me nuts. I try to tell her there are probably hundreds of other nests close by that she could worry about also. But she says I saw this one. So aaaaaah there ya go I will NEVER show her such things again

One of my first jobs, when I was 15 was cutting the Lawn at Royal Crest apts.(a Flately corp.)this one was right near little Rhody beagle club so I think they used to breed rabbit's .In the springtime we couldn't make two passes without tripping over one of those holes with bunnies in them.We got so used to it ,it didn't bother us anymore. We moved quite a few nest but we also thought it did more harm than good,so we just mowed them over. They must have natural instincts to stay low cause I never saw any get chewed up.The nest was still there after the pass.Next time you look they'll probably be gone.

Portuguese Rabbit Stew

Category: Main dish

Recipe: Coelho à caçadora - Rabbit stew

This recipe has its origin in Portugal, especifically in Estremadura.

We have chosen this recipe because we are tired too see that when someone talks about Portuguese cousine people always associate it to codfish, so, this time we decided to give you someting different, like a rabbit.

We hope you enjoy it. Have a nice meal!

Ingredients: (4 - 6 people)

1 small rabbit
2 soup spoons of olive- oil
2dl of white wine
2 dl of red wine
4 tomatoes
1 onion
1 clove of garlic
parsley
salt
pepper
1 cabbage

Instructions:

Season the rabbit with a bit of salt and pepper and put it in a bowl with the red wine. Next, cut the rabbit into pieces. Heat the olive- oil in a pot and when it is hot enough add the rabbit.

Leave it on strong fire for 10 to 15 minutes, turning the pieces of the rabbit so that they roast equally.

Reduce the heat and add the white wine, the pricked tomatoes without skin and without pipes, chop the onion, the garlic and the parsley, season with salt and pepper.

Cover the pot and let it cook for one hour in mild fire.

Taste it and rectify the seasonings. Put the rabbit with mashed potatoes or boiled potatoes, fried sliced bread and boiled cabbage on a large plate.

Joe, you realize you're going to have to buy a shotgun and a couple of Beagles now don't cha?
A 12 guage loaded with #4 shot is a good bunny load. The #4 is a good bresh buster cuz bunnies like to hide in the bresh. Get a Remington Model 870. If you decide to squirrel hunt just change to #6 shot.

The Beagles having short legs will chase em right into the bresh and find em for you. Just try to get there before they get a holt of one though cuz if you don't... you won't have nothin left. :D

Oh yeah, I forgot to add, you have to keep the Beagles in a pen to make them more aggressive. If you don't, they won't hunt.

I hate yammering dogs. We are so lucky both are dogs are not yammerers. Lucky thar lab bark is deep and loud and used only once or twice for people or critters entering the property and he isn't napping ( he dose that a lot :D ) Bandit the French bulldog is quiet as a church mouse all day but when the sun goes down if you come in the house he will bark but other than that he is quiet. Cant understand how all day long you can go in & out of the house but as soon as it gets dark out he will give a warning bark. But basically there both quite dogs

ishmael
06-14-2003, 07:29 AM
Sheba isn't a barker either, for that I'm glad. She gives a woof at something that startles here now and agin, but no regular barking.

But, I'm remembering a story of trauma from young childhood regarding bunnies and dogs.

We tried to raise an orphaned bunny when I was little. I don't remember the circumstances of its abandonment, but it might have had to do with Kurt, my eldest brother's Irish Terrier.

In the event, the bunny died and we buried it in the back yard. The next day Kurt, who was on a lead tied in the back yard, proceeded to dig the bunny up. My mother and I were alone in the house. I must have been four, so this is one of my earliest memories.

Mother tried to stop Kurt and bring him in, and Kurt attacked her. I remember her coming to me with a torn dress and a bloody bite on her arm, and her shutting me in my room, telling me to stay there until she came back. I remember being frightened, really scared.

Kurt, a nice dog, had to be put down. It was a family tragedy remembered vibrantly, but in the way of memories of that age, without grown-up detail. I remember it as horribly traumatic to all of us, but imagine the grief of my poor brother, having his dog put down.
