Jimmy Buffett. Don't know if he can put you to work, though.

The last time I was in Key West was the winter of 1979. Fringes, well realized. A camp of hippies making bongs the next key over, and wild bars of drunks and philosophers.

One of my favorite memories of alltime, was going to sunset pier, which was a movable feast of churning people. Sundown party! An old black man rode an old bicycle with a basket on front full of bannana bread wrapped in celophane. I was glad he was there.

I got that good ol' bannana bread, if you don't get it now don't blame me when it's gone.

Just make sure you are there during fantasy fest.

Only parade I ever went to that had brass poles and strippers on the floats.

Oh and the painted "topsides".....very nice.

Better be comfortable with alternative lifestyles is not "alternative" down there.

What fun!!!!

Key West, like every other tropical place you can drive to, has been ruined, I'm quite sure.

1979 fostered this:

Margaritaville

"Nibblin' on sponge cake
Watchin' the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin' my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp they're beginnin' to boil

Chorus:
Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's nobody's fault

I don't know the reason
I stayed here all season
Nothin' to show but this brand new tattoo
But it's a real beauty
A Mexican cutie
How it got here I haven't "a clue

Chorus:
Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
Now I think
Hell, it could be my fault

I blew out my flip-flop
Stepped on a pop-top
Cut my heel had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's my own damn fault
Yes and some people claim that there's a woman to blame
And I know it's my own damn fault"

Where's Hemingway and Pilar? Where's Harry Morgan having and having not?

I've come to hate the mindless development, the rich licking their gates.

When I first wandered down that way, circa 1975, I camped with a college crew studying biology. We didn't make it to Key West. Long Key was our base camp. At that time, and again five years later, there was a lovely reef for snorkeling. My first encounter with barracuda. Now, report from a friend in Jax, there's a Piggly Wiggly on the site, the reef, dead.

In 1979 there was a tension in Key West. Cops on the street enforced a shirt law during the day, and at night the women got naked in the gin palaces. Odd place. I only imagine that it's gotten odder. Not a place on my list to visit now, though Florida Bay is still wild and beautiful, by most reports.

I've only been there during Race Week..
The only good thing was it was 24 degrees on the Eastern Shore and 80 in Key West.
There are some nice aspects of being down there...But it was one crowded weekend...A bit like Mardi Gras...in New Orleans...but instead of nak'd women.and glass necklaces...etc..had a lot of Gill jackets and top siders.
