OK I know engines aren't WB-Forum-esque persay. However this enging sits on a wood runabout so I figure this is OK. What I am looking for is some sort of online (ie FREE!) guide for taking apart starters. My Evinrude has abandoned me at last and I am interested in trying the fix myself before paying out for it. Any ideas?

I did it to my '78 Merc 20. First thing I did was find out if parts can still be had. Some of the older-but-not-antique motors are difficult to find crankcase parts for. I was told I only had six more months before crank pin bearings would be impossible to buy.

Next, I had to find a large table to spread everything out on as it came apart. Stocked up on baby-food jars and labels to store bolts, etc. Using a video camcorder, I recorded as much of the disassembly as I could, especially the powerhead-to-chassis. I did have a book, but that was my sister-in-law's and she was in the middle of her own rebuild.

In my case, a main bearing spewed it's balls into cylinder #2, so I had to smooth the inside of the power head and find a new piston. A propane torch on the top of a piston for a minute or so is all that's needed to free up wrist pins, and have a small piece of dry ice and some alcohol to soak and shrink the pin at re-assembly time. It's pretty cool how the thing just slides right in there while cold. After a couple seconds you can't even move it.

It came out pretty good, but I'd have put in a new crank if I could have found one.

Thank you all! Those 2 sites are great! I took off the starter and got it apart. The problem turned out to be a shattered magnet. I took her all apart and got rid of the pieces. While in, I figured I'd do some routine maintenance and hit the coil w some 600grit. After getting her back together I was able to start her...with one hitch. Over the past couple weeks, starting the engine has consisted of turning the key again and again until the starter broke free. Well that caused the solenoid to go out so I replaced that, and now all seems well! Man, if it aint one thing, it's another.

I guess I should pay more attention to the post I'm responding to. Starter....gotcha.

Rambler, if you mistakenly suppose that engine talk is off limits, do a search on "China Diesel"
