Much better sailors than me have debated this knot, but the fact that they were scratching thier brows makes me want to ask the experts. Is this knot correct? Mainmast, no halyards, no gooseneck...

Looks like a bowline used to hold a spirit boom both to the mast, and either down onto that white tabernacle or down as a vang. Can't guess if it's "right".

It's not a bowline nor any other knot to which I know the name. It's closest cousin might be a buntline hitch but it's definatly the cousin no one acknowledges, even at funerals.
It's a very odd looking arrangement as the sprit by which a snotter is held usually point up a bit more and a sort of sprit-boom might be expected to have a little more heft.
So, even though I've great confidence in my rigging knowleged, I'd rather not speculate without a picture of the whole rig.

Ian, I do believe it's a mis-tied bowline. Its held together for three sails now... Maybe if I epoxy it??? A gooseneck & halyard is on the agenda. Good thing I'm keeping her on a very small lake!
