Had a visit with an Oncologist today. He's actually getting ready to start a trial for a thryroid cancer drug! Even better, it's an oral drug, so no central line or other IV nasty! smile.gif

Said my prognosis might be not as bad as previously predicted, but that the coughing up blood I've been doing for the past 3 weeks isn't a really good sign (on the other hand, the Otolaryngologist and the Pulmonologist both said they think the bleeding might be in my neck, not in my lungs).

Said he's not ready to recommend starting chemo on me in any case.

I've got a CT scan and a "Muga" tomorrow - those will provide more info. (A "Muga", another type of x-ray, shows how well one's heart empties itself out on each beat I gather ("exhaust fraction"). It must be good or chemo is not an option.)

He wants to see me again next week.

Hey George - he is/was a Brazilian! A very nice fellow! Dr. Renato Martins. smile.gif

Whole blinking day at the hospital tomorrow! :( I also have to see a Thoracic Surgeon tomorrow who's going to talk about bronchoscopy and doing something about the bleeding, if needed.

Does this mean Meerkitty may be around longer for me to fling insults and "bitchy" remarks at? :D

Hope it works out for you Meer. smile.gif

Got a good book or magazine you can take to the hospital with you?

I spent most of today stuck in my surgeon's office for a check-up. I think I read every issue he had in the waiting room.

David, old chap. I'm extrememly pleased to hear your news.

I hope you intend to continue to be a thorn in the sides of blowhards on here.

Well, more news anyway:

1. Got another CT Scan today.
Bad: neck tumor is about as big as what they took out before and it's closing off my windpipe again. Also, the probable cause of the blood I've been coughing up (which is slowly getting worse).
Good: lung tumors are only slightly enlarged from 13 months ago. This is GOOD NEWS - I can live with a permanent trach tube if I have to, but once the lungs go it's hasta la vista baby. smile.gif I will live longer if my lungs hold up, and there is a possibility of remission! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

2. Saw the Thoracic Surgeon who had several options:
a. radiation to shrink/kill tumor. Could stop bleeding. Seeing a Radiation Oncologist next month for that.
b. trachial resection: remove the tumor, thus reducing/removing airway obstruction and "cure" the sleep apnia so I wouldn't need the machine. Downside is that I could end up losing my last vocal chord and that would mean a permanent trach tube (YUCK! THEY SUCK!).
c. either laser cauterization of bleeding area(s) in trach and/or embolism of vessel(s) supplying bleeding area.

Next step is to consult with Radiation Oncologist and the Otolaryngologist. Probably end up doing an angiogram to visualize suspect areas in lungs and neck where bleeding could be occuring.

After that, we'll see what I/we want to do.

Geez mate - I reckon I'd hit the Bundy (rum) and keep those C-cells pissed so's they don't do any harm.

I 'spose the docs have other ideas for valid reasons though?

Take care and stick with us.......

This is much better news than a month or so ago when you felt you only had a couple of months.

Trach' tubes suck (and blow) because that's what they're supposed to do.

Losing your vocal chords is bad, you won't be able to shout "Starboard" but the boats you like are so slow, most consider them stationary obstructions anyway. You won't lose your "voice" on here and can continue to hound the blowhards.

How are you doing in your general health? Smoking cessation and weight loss <nag nag nag>

Stopped smoking awhile back.

Weight loss has been harder.

Meer glad the news isn't so dire. Now I won't feel guilty when I mouth off with a snide remark. :D
