OK, I'm trying to link my new (used) iMac to my home network so that I can get to the Internet from the iMac. I've got DSL service that comes in through a DSL modem and then to a router and I've got my XP box plugged into this system and everything seems to work fine on that side. I've plugged the iMac into another port on the router and I can log into the router from the iMac, but I can't get the iMac to see beyond the router to the Internet. I've spent the last 2 hours messing with the TCP/IP settings on the iMac and nothing seems to work. So, if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks!

More info needed. Is your XP box using DHCP to connect to the router? If so, the mac must be similarly configured.
The inability to get beyone the router makes me wonder what IP address the mac is using. Most routers won't route some ranges of IP address because they are not "legal" (by protocol) to be routed on the public net.
I trust you do know that you can't use the same IP address for both the XP box and the mac? ;)
Too many other variables to say much beyond this without more information.

I figured there would be some questions of this sort ...
On the XP box I am using DHCP. I've got the iMac TCP/IP settings set to Connect via "Ethernet" configure "Using DHCP server". I was never really a network guy and I'm even rustier now because I haven't had to deal with this stuff recently so I'm not sure where to go from there...

Hmmm... are there any settings on the router that limit how many DHCP "shares" are handed out?
Oh yeah - and how is the internal XP<->Mac connectivity via the router?

Oh yeah, and per someone else's recent experience, are you power cycling the modem/router every time you make changes in settings? Sometimes those settings are "sticky" until a power cycle/reset.
NB: If you power cycle/reset the router, you'll have to do likewise with both boxes so they'll renegotiate DHCP shares.

Problem solved!!! Thanks to your pointing out the importance of DHCP I dug around on the router and found that DHCP was disabled! I enabled it and rebooted the router and the iMac and I'm in business. I'm not sure why the XP box was connecting without DHCP enabled on the router but we'll let that sleeping dog lie. Thanks for your help.
