In the study that caused Vioxx to be pulled from the market, participants with no symptoms of cardiovascular disease suffered 1.6% more myocardial infarctions and strokes than the placebo group.

It's likely that 80,000,000 people took Vioxx for the pain of rheumatoid or inflammatory arthritis.

80 million times 1.6% = 1,280,000 additional MI's and strokes.

Although that number could be several times higher because cardiovascular disease and one or the other types of arthritis are so commonly found together.

The love of my life was on Vioxx, but she stopped taking it the day they pulled it off the market.

Take a different look - if 80,000,000 people DID NOT take it and their heart attack or stroke occurance was let's say 1,000,000 - then you could expect for 80,000,000 that did take Vioxx 1,000,000 + 16,000 or 1,016,000 would have a heart attack or stroke. Not insignificant, but alot less scary.

Take your pick: Constant pain or a somewhat increased risk of heart attack. There are other ways to reduce your risk. Loose weight, quite smoking, eat a Medetrainian diet, etc.
