There I was quietly eating half a kilo of prawns on the back deck by myself.... when BANG ... and I looked up to see the builder next door (putting on an upstairs extension) .... down on his haunches saying lots of "Oh Sh&&t"s.
My daughter, who is training in traditional Chinese medicine, did the stopping of the blood, of which there was lots, flowing out the top of his head, the wife got the ambos (Aussie for paramedics).
He had been hit by a falling frame - fair on top of the head. I reckon there's lots of stitches there by now - and he was being x-rayed for neck damage.
Funny thing is - in the hour or so afterwards, lots of extra safety barriers seem to have appeared.

I often wear my beekeeper's helmet as a sun hat because it's easy to clean and doesn't stink with sweat. (I no longer keep bees.) There are times, even though it's not rated as a safety hard hat, that it's been really nice to have and may have saved me a stitch or two.

Lotsa blood from just about any scalp wound...and even the straw beekeepers helmet may have gone a long way toward minimizing the damage unless the blow was enough to cause neck damage as well (in which case the regular hard hat may not have helped either). Scalp cuts are scary looking even when they are not too serious otherwise.
Stitches are stitches just the same and indicate a fairly serious cut if more than about three or so. I'm glad your daughter was able to help and that your friend wasn't hurt worse...
I’ve lived a lifetime doing construction and have seen a lot of bruises and cuts…I have seen only one death (in Brasil) where a fall of twenty-two feet and landing headmost ended a man’s life…he was in the act of clipping on to safety lines at the top of his climb…the hard hat which he was wearing didn’t help.

I was working on a remodeling project at my church a few years ago and was working side-by-side, ladder-by-ladder with seasoned citizen friend. We both had crowbars and were tearing out a piece of wall about 6 or 7 feet above the ground. We were chatting and crowbarring and making progress.
Then, suddenly I was standing on the ground, facing the opposite direction looking at my crowbar on the ground. Everything seemed kind of confusing. I kind of looked around saw Willis on his ladder looking at me. He had kind of an amused, concerned, impatient look on his face. He asked if I was okay. I asked "why?". He said "Because I just hit you in the head with my crowbar."

Hey, we worked out what happened.
My 20 year old daughter walked up the road just seconds before it happened.
He was PERVING - distracted!
Five staple penalty is fair eh?

Fair? For just looking as she walked up the road?

Curses, a falling frame just fell on my head.
Head wounds do indeed bleed a lot.
My favorite head wound was the one I got between the eyes. I was standing on a saw horse, pulling a nail out from overhead. I was using two hands on the hammer to pull the nail out. When it came out the hammer hit me right square between the eyes. Cost me 5 stiches.

Come to think of it - I got three stitches in the top of my head because of her, too. I was working on her first car and stood up - the corner of the bonnet (hood) got me a beauty - much red juice.
