My favorite steel string just hasn't been the same since I put my foot through the top. So, I'm replacing it.

I remember that article, Michael. I think it was by (or about) Toronto luthier William "Grit" Laskin. I don't remember the rosette thing, though.
I used to do mosaic rosettes, like this one:
But then a friend told me he that, while he admired the effort that went into them, he didn't really like them much. These days I'm drawn to simpler, bolder patterns. The one at the top of the page is an endgrain (intarsia) rosette, made of some birch flooring and a scrap of ebony fingerboard material, cut like so:

Jack, right now it sounds like a thin piece of wood. I've just started.
I'm aiming for a nasal, bluesy tone. It's hard to coax a decent bass out of a steel string, without building a really big box.Comment
