Mount St Helens looks like trouble

Watchin CNN right now and it looks like she's gonna blow again. Lots of smoke and steam. Quakes are coming 3-4 per minute.

Earlier in the week they were blaming it on rain water seeping in.

Now they're talking about the lava dome growing.

Should be capable of throwing rocks 3 miles!

It blew this afternoon (shortly after noon local time). Pictures of the eruption should be available at this web page sometime next week (according to the note added to the page at 4:58 pm PDT today).

Here is one shot of the eruption from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer web site :

One wonders what might be going on at the Pacific/NA plate boundary. There is also a volcano erupting in Mexico, and a whole bunch of small quakes along the San Andreas Fault in CA.

All told, I don't think this is an especially unusual level of activity. If it's a bit more than average I would just chalk it up to normal variations in the timing of essentially random events (random in their timing relative to each other). If you take a limited collection of unrelated events there will be times when more of them are occuring and times when fewer of them are occurring, just because of what happens when you randomly distribute a limited number of events.

Talked to a friend in Longview, WA today (in the shadow of the mountain.) She said no big deal, the main thing they were watching was the wind direction hoping to avoid a big ash fall. I'm hoping to go out there sometime soon. I think it would be a real kick to see the mountain smoking in the distance.

That's actually what a scientist called it. Seems there's more to come, and it was just clearing it's throat today.

It is really difficult to take predictions about volcanoes seriously.

The models are just too vague.

But it is not the best idea to build near a volcano.

Just checked the news a bit ago, and the pundits say that the magma is moving again and a big eruption is still imminent. Was watching Fox news, and the reporter looked to be a little closer to the action than I would think prudent.

I'm in Pittsburgh today, and I'm thinking I'm about as close as I want to be.

Maybe it will form itself into a better shape again.

Add about eight inches to her neck and she'd look like Barbie
The doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power, and oppression, is absurd, slavish, and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind.
Personal failures are too important to be trusted to others.
