How big a storm was it, compared to others?

Category 4 when it reached land, which is strong but not THAT rare; BUT it was also very large in diameter, so it affected a much larger area than most hurricanes. Or so I understand.

By what metric?

There are at least four good ones:

a) Barometric pressure on landfall
b) Wind speed
c) Total cost of damage
d) Total loss of life

How about storm surge? It was 28 feet in places from what Ive heard. What can stand up to that?

Big. Wide and strong. Wind damage, surge damage, up there on the list. Because of coastal development, and the subsequence disruption it is right up at the top.

In measured terms, I don't think it was at the top or even near it, but all that pales, eh? New Orleans is gone!

It was the 4th lowest pressure of all the recorded storms to hit the US, that combined with the huge size, surge height and the slow foreward motion all combined really made a super storm, which as we know aimed it's fury on a very vulnerable location.
