Anybody here, especially in the over 50 group, take anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or acetaminophen before you start doing heavy work -- you know, work that you know will make you ache and creak and moan and groan the next day?
What do you take and how does it work for you?

I will take an Advil before setting off on a what I know will be a strenuous hike. I have a bothersome knee, and I find that it helps me quite a bit.

Yeah, if I take a couple of ibuprofen before heavy work it seems to help a lot.

Its comon for rugby players to take them the night before and after a game, reduces the muscle spasm caused by bruising. They can run at training on monday, not crawl.
I use them the same way for weekends slipping the boat or heavy gardening.
Watch out for stomach problems, no alcohol, and asprin allergies. Check with your doctor if you use them regularly.
I did it in my 30's in anticipation of long bike rides.

I think it makes a lot of sense. Just have to remember to take it. Rick

Hey, Lee, thanks for that heads up. Just did a quick Google, and found that indeed, Acetaminophen works by blocking pain in the brain. Not so good for preventing/healing inflammation from muscle abuse.
I've taken ibuprofen before and after day long heavy work, and it's what works for me.
I just wasn't sure how widespread or well known the practice is, or if anyone on the forum had any interesting ideas that I hadn't considered.
Followup question: Has anyone ever taken both ibuprofen and acetaminophen at the same time? Apparently, due to their different mechanisms, this is sometimes prescribed by doctors.

Not answering your question, but my F-I-L's MD suggested maxing his daily dosage for mild pain and arthritis, for a day or two, when it's bad, then tapering down.
This,as opposed to taking one or two a day, when it hurts.

Cedar, I was reading about a fellow who kayaked from Ventura (I think) to the Channel Islands where ibuprofen was a necessary part of managing pain/recovery right after rest food and water.
