Hi,
I'm thinking of building Oughtred's John Dory and would like to hear of anyone's experience building and using this boat. I'm also interested in knowing how much material it takes to build it. Thanks.

I can't answer directly. Maybe 2 years ago a John Dory was offered for sale in the classified section of WoodenBoat Magazine. I was too late to buy the boat. I did correspond with the builder via email. If I can find the back issue with the email address I'll pass it along to you.
I can narrow the search in WoodenBoat a little. The electronic photos the builder sent are dated 5-10-2001. So, the issue would have been immediately before May, 2001.
You might want to look at this thread in the Design section here and write to Iain for information on some new "dory-skiff" designs he has added to his catalog.

As for material costs, my Caledonia yawl with decks fore and aft, required 11 sheets of mixed thickness plywood. 3 @ 12mm, 6 @ 9.5mm and 2 @ 6mm. John Dory would probably require less than that. Ask Iain for a materials list. Be careful, though. I found his materials list for my boat to be shy about 100%.
