While we were back east a couple weeks ago, and doing the "rounds" of the various North Shore boatyards, I poked around the lots at both Crocker's and Manchester Marine by the railroad tracks in Manchester. (A highly recomended past-time, by the way...) I found there a very sorrowful looking little knockabout that looked suspiously similar to my own Dark Harbor project. Perhaps a bit larger, and of an "odd" sort of cold molded construction, but still pretty close. She was obviously neglected, and had been poorly sheathed at some distant point, but she had some interesting hardware on her and I had to ask about her. Turns out she's an S & S design and was destined for the chainsaw sometime in the next few weeks. I asked about the possibility of salvaging the cast bronze rudder hardware as it looked perfect for my project. "No problem... I'm sure he'd be glad to have it go to good use!" I told him "Great!" and that I'd have my sister pick 'em up for me. Well, I called yesterday, (my first day back at the computer since I last spoke with him) and he told me that the rudder parts were waiting right there in a milk crate for me. (They'd sawed her up last Wed.) When I asked how much the owner wanted he asked me to hold on while he went and found 'em and asked the guy. Called me back a few minutes later only to have to tell me the idiots who cut it up must have thought he meant they were supposed to save the rudder itself. They did. It's all in one nice piece, still delaminating, leaning up on the wall next to my box of hardware. The gudgions, (which is what I wanted) were neatly sawed through just forward of the rudder post!

Ah, well... I asked him to save 'em for me anyway. They're a really elegant "elbowed" design and I suppose I could jury rig some new "strapping" onto 'em and use 'em for patterns with a foundry out here. Sound feasible? Wouldn't cost anything but the shipping and I sure haven't found anything else "stock" that would work.

Art,

How sad! Give me a call when you get the hardware. We might be able to do a good brazed repair on them that will give you back the attachment points and make them useable again.

Good Luck,
Jamie

Welcome back Art, too bad about the rudder hardware. have you checked out www.porttownsendfoundry.com (http://www.porttownsendfoundry.com) ? I may have already asked that question. Anyway, if you haven't go to their website, click on "marine hardware", then click on "rudder hardware". Maybe give them a call about casting you some stuff or using your butchered ones as patterns. Good luck.

Thanks, guys. This picture from PT Foundry looks pretty close the ones that were destroyed. Especially the angle on that lower set.

Perhaps they will already have some patterns ready made that would work for me. Every time I've talked with 'em before at the Festivals there, they basically said bring 'em some patterns. I never had the plans or a picture with me at the time...

At any rate, I'll get my sister to send what's left of the ones from Manchester this way and see what I've got. It just really annoys the hell out of me missing out on an opportunity to get an exisiting set like that, especially when I could have had 'em for a "song"...

Ah, well... Perhaps they'll be here in time for you guys to take a look when I finally get my "Huck Finn", ballast drilling party organised? Either of you two gonna have any free time in the next week or two? Roger, did you catch my little debate with myself about maybe using Monel instead of bronze bolts on my most recent "Keel Bolt" thread?

Your thoughts? Any suggestions for a good local source for Monel, if that's how I go?

Regarding monel. Great stuff. Save it for your next boat Ed. You've got a sound plan already established. Go with it and don't alter your course, you're almost done.

There's definitely open time in the schedule. Give a holler when you think you might want to start drilling and we'll get together. BTW, Victoria's keel bolts are bronze into lead and have shown no outward signs of any problems. Of course, I haven't pulled one to really know so...? However, none of the surveyors who have looked at the boat have felt there was any reason for concern. Go for it.
