C-O-L-D. Ice on the Bay's fringes now. RARUS's ice eater should be up and running.

Now, I have this culvert problem... ;) :D

I just wish we'd get some darn snow. I mean, it's cold anyway, can't it be worth it? Let it snow, let it snow, let it snooooooooow.

Sorry, Mike; we did sort of run amok on your original posting of this topic, didn't we? Bad me.

It is very cold up here - at least by our standards. It was -18 degrees Celcius (-1 F) this morning at 0800, warmed up to about -10C (14F) this afternoon, and expected to drop to about -19C (-2F) tonight. It is crystal clear and sparkly from the ice crystals suspended in the air by the light winds remaining from the blizzard on Sun/Monday. We're expecting a slight warming trend over the next couple of days ( up to 0C - 32F on Thursday!!) as another low pressure system flows in, bringing another mild snowstorm on Thursday. When we get clear of that, it's back to the deep freeze on the weekend. There is noise being made about another snowstorm - a good 'un - bringing more snow early next week.

They say that adversity makes you appreciate good things more. I guess that's why we like sailing so much up here. :D

At least -14° Fareinheit here this AM. Maybe colder, but I haven't gotten up the courage to go outside and inspect the min/max thermometer behind the woodshed.

But I bet the pond ice is thick enough to skate on if I can just get enough snow cleared. And we're supposed to get more tonight.

12.5°F now, but overnight it got down to 10.4° the lowest we've been this winter.. It's 43° in Loon's wheelhouse, and 15° in the coldframe.

The canal is starting to harden, so I set up the Ice Eater yesterday, and will splash it today, at low tide. :(

28 degrees (centigrade, of course), muggy, drizzly.

We are hoping for some sun and south-east breeze by the weekend.

Our cold snap has passed, thankfully! It's been in the 50's daytime of late.

3 days ago they said there was 2,700 miles of clouds and rain to our west coming at us - 2 weeks of rain or so!. Past 3 days was lots of raaaaain. Last night was the same prediction. Today, its been warm and SUNNY! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

We had a cold snap like Meerkat as well. Been really raining. It has calmed down some and cleared abit. Was warm enough that my bees from my 3 hives were out for a early spring flight. They seemed happy.

canoes...sounds as though it is about time to medicate them....if they are headinjg out of the hive.
What do you use?

Meerkat
01-19-2005, 06:34 PM
Speaking of canoes, the early return of warmer weather has caused a very premature end to the high country snow season and caused all the usual suspect rivers and other locales to flood. People were shown using canoes and kayaks to get around. Doubtless, as they do every flood season, the salmon are taking to the roads. (OK, maybe that's just flooding in the fall, but it does happen! What a salmon thinks he/she's going to do in a flooded cow pasture, I'll never know! ;) )

Hi uncas,
I will wait a bit to make sure it is warm enough, but i will give the bees some terramycin in powered sugar and a couple of apistan strips. I will however give them some sugar tomorrow on top just in case they need some. They didnt care for me cleaning away the dead bees(stung, no good deed unpunished lol). It always fun to work with them.

uncas
01-19-2005, 06:44 PM
I was just asking as they were apparently active...I used to feed them the same medication but it wasn't until the second week in Feb...weather dependent.
You gotta treat them right....I had 14 hives for ten years...the only time I got stung was when I was wearing gloves or the humidity was high...That must have pissed them off. Otherwise, had a fairly calm relationship...
Bees are GREAT! Wish I could have them here but my neighbors...am living in a city pop 2000 now, would be pissed off...

Six inches and still snowing, the wind is going to increase 10 to 15 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH so drifting will be a problem for travelers and the idiot sledders out there trying to find the biggest hill in the county to slide down. ;) :D

Cold and grey here today. :(

You ever do any downhill skiing Al? I used to before I left Wv.

It's clearing up. Tomorrow looks like the first sunny and breezy day in a while. Wouldn't you know it, we are off before noon, to Belem for a week's mission. No sailing until next weekend, if the rain doesn't come back...

About an inch of snow on my car and some drifting in the driveway but it looks passable.

6:00 AM not too bad here yet, probably 8 inches of fluffy snow and 6 F. I guess I will have to shovel a small patch for the dogs to go out, I just offered to let them out and they both just stuck their noses out, looked up at me and said "you want us to go there, no frekin way we are not stepping out into 8 inches of snow"  . Gosh what a difference between these little Norfolk Terriers and the Siberian Huskies we used to have.

abe
01-23-2005, 07:19 AM
Ken, you should be in the snow belt of New Hampshire, 16" on the ground here next to Taxachusetts with a forecast of 38" according to the NWS website for Essex county.

We did find enough space just outside for the dogs to crap. Now we can go back to bed given that Church services are cancelled for the first time in 40 years.

OK let me tell you just how much of a lard ass Lucky thar dog is. Last night after our blizzard dinner party, SWMBO threw the old bread outside for the birds. She threw it up on rock mound in front of our house. During the night mother nature dropped over a foot of fresh snow. This morning we let lucky out to do his business. 5 minutes later SWIMBO is calling me to the window. There is Lucky dog on top of the mound nose down in the snow sniffing out and eating the bread buried a foot beneath the snow

I do not know what is more amazing Lucky' nose OR ability to eat anything LOL smile.gif
