Well I'll be. That damn Purple Heart is finally worth something.

Thanks Tom.

John, the Phoenix restaurant is supposed to be a really nice one. I know I'm going to the one at the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

It is indeed. We've been there a few times already. Great martinis. :D

But alas, no harbor view in Phoenix. "All beach, no ocean", as the saying goes. Enjoy and thanks again.

A quick story for your amusement. Several years ago I saw a car with Purple Heart license plates.

http://www.dot.state.az.us/mvd/vehicle/images/pheart.jpg

"Hey that's great." I think. "They're giving vets a break on their plates." (AZ license fees are some of the highest in the country and, at the time, mine was over $800.) So I call the DMV and say "I saw those new Purple Heart license plates and wanted to get some information." "Sure." says the nice lady at DMV. "There is a $25 initial fee and an additional $5 per year." "It's EXTRA?" says I. "I thought this might be a kind of 'Thank you for your service' thing and there would be a discount to wounded veterans." "A DISCOUNT? Oh no, not at all." says the DMV lady. "It's EXTRA." "I see." says I. "I guess you folks figure if I'm stupid enough to stop a bullet, I'm dumb enough to pay for that license plate." "Yes, that's right." "Thanks for your time, miss. You’ve answered all my questions" :D

I can't imagine driving to Hackensack for a free fish. Nice thought, though, and a legitimate promotional expense charge.

Wish they had one around here.

John can't tell you about the Purple Heart plates here in TN, but I can tell you that as members of the National Guard all we have to pay for tags is the tax. When I go to renew my tags it only cost me $2.50.

Kipling offers some bitter solace in "Tommy."

Well Chad, your folks got it right. Here, Guardsmen pay $25 initial plus $25 extra per year. Same for Firefighters & Police Officers. Pearl Harbor survivors pay the same as Purple Hearts, 25+5. Former POW's, 15+5. PEARL HARBOR SURVIVORS AND POW'S HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! Barry Goldwater must be spinning in his grave. The only break goes to Medal of Honor recipients - free. :rolleyes:

Thanks Bob, I should have read "Tommy" years ago. I'll get a copy.

Tommy

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o'beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's ``Thank you, Mister Atkins,'' when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's ``Thank you, Mr. Atkins,'' when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy how's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints:
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;

While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind,"
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country," when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
But Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool - you bet that Tommy sees!

Touching. Thanks again, Bob. And thanks to all the "Tommy's" too.
