View Full Version : The Finest Beer in the World

In another thread this was attributed to us in the US. Just now I'm making my own, which probably won't be quite up to that label, but I think I'm doing okay on this batch. Isn't the finest beer the one suited to one's own individual taste?

Since it's been so long since I've brewed, I'm making a stab in the dark and threw this together with no recipe:

2 gal water
1# Muntons Light
1# Muntons Amber
1# Muntons Dark
1 oz Challenger pellets
boil 1 hour
Add a 1/2 oz leaf plug of Fuggle
boil another 20 minutes
Cool and transfer to a 3 gallon carboy
Pitch with Safbrew S-33 Ale yeast
Adding water back to make it 2 gallons again, I have an initial gravity of about 54.

I couldn't find my airlocks, so I put a sanitized 1/2 cup mason jar upside down over the top of the carboy, then when the bubbling stopped, I replaced it with a new clean plastic bag and a rubber band. I also gave it a good shot of wine gas (N2) when making the changeover, so as to drive out any O2 that might have gotten in. The bag is not inflating, so things seem to be done.

Now I need to get bottles, FAST! I boiled and pitched on Friday, and it's already done! I've brewed before, but that was nearly ten years ago, and it never finished this fast. Unfortunately, The place in Ellsworth where I got the ingredients was out of caps and bottles. I'm thinking of raiding (don't worry - I'll make a donation too) a charity bottle return to find non-screw top bottles, but I have to have new caps.

If I keep this up, at least in winters, it will make one of those 5 liter mini-keg systems look better and better.

Take a large Sifter full of Bran
Hops to your Taste -- Boil these
3 hours. Then strain out 30 Gall.
into a Cooler put in 3 Gallons
Molasses while the Beer is
scalding hot or rather drain the
molasses into the Cooler. Strain
the Beer on it while boiling hot
let this stand til it is little more
than Blood warm. Then put in
a quart of Yeast if the weather is
very cold cover it over with a Blanket.
Let it work in the Cooler 24 hours
then put it into the Cask. leave
the Bung open til it is almost done
working -- Bottle it that day Week
it was Brewed.

I used to brew my own too and it wuz the finest beer in the world. Finer n frog hair as a matter of fact.

It all has the same fx though. Ya might as well go get yerself some grain alcohol and pour it down yer gullet. It's a lot quicker.

Dan -

Maltose.com, located in Monroe, CT can ship you all the caps you can possibly want. We just brewed up a batch of a Guinness type stout on Saturday.

"...we wish to emphasize that in future in all cities, markets and in the country, the only ingredients used for the brewing of beer must be Barley, Hops and Water. Whosoever knowingly disregards or transgresses upon this ordinance, shall be punished by the Court authorities' confiscating such barrels of beer, without fail.

...perhaps this provides enough reason for an preemptive attack on the US ;)

Martin, you left out "God's Goodness" (as it was known). As you will see above, mine is made of three kinds of malt, two kinds of hops, one kind of water, and some of "God's Goodness" from a little green foil envelope. You therefore may not confiscate it. (edit: I'm going to prime with corn sugar, but you still cant confiscate it.)

Mike, I'll bear your words in mind, should I get to the point when speed and extreem drunkenness become the most important factors.

Lisa, thanks. I'll look them over. In the mean time, my Ellsworth supplier apparently does have a bag of caps, and can order bottles for about $10/case of 24. I wish I could reuse what's on hand, but they're all threaded.

Chad, actually, those are the sorts of things I try to avoid. Sex in a canoe. I mean, they're using rice to make it taste even weaker and more cidery. The last time I tried a big comercial beer, it was advertized as dark, but it was still just an American Light Lager with a dash of carmel coloring added. If it isn't thick enough to work as motor oil in a pinch, why drink it?
