I am quite interested in building the TOMCAT by William Garden.

The design seems to fit my needs in most every respect including the fact that it is carvel design which I would like to try.

I have been hesitant to build carvel since I cannot leave the boat in the water and would store it on a trailer. Howver, the TOMCAT design is a variation that seems to take that into account as the seams are sealed with epoxy.

I would really like to find out how sucessful this has been and whether the first TOMCAT is kept mostly in the water or out of the water as I would have to do.

Does anyone know the answers or how I might find the answers to the above questions.

Also is anyone out there building a TOMCAT?

Any and all thoughts would be welcome!

Lots of Tomcat threads have popped up in the last year, deservedly so.

IIRC, such forum luminaries as mrleft8, smalser, and dave have provided input to just your questions.

edit to add: I just did a quick google search and at least 5 different threads exist on Tomcat.

also: do you own the book by Garden as I think he also anecdotally adresses some of your concerns.

I'ts epoxy glued and FG'ed, isn't it? Kept out of the water sounds not only possible but preferable.

If I remember correctly, William Garden used epoxy and glass over the cedar carvel planking so he could store Tom Cat in his boat house between uses. Nice boat.

Here is the thread I started not too long ago.

Dave Fleming's Tomcat thread (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=004786)

And of course one could use the search feature on this page for further digging.
