View Full Version : Teak Stained?

Greetings,

I have finished resawing the teak for my deck. Many thanks to those in this forum who offered advice. It went far better than I could have expected. One unexpected thing, however, is that the any side of the teak slab that was "exposed" was a much darker color than the inside of the wood. All of the pieces have dark ends and the outside board are darker as well. This seems to have "penetrated" the wood and isn't just a surface condition.

Is this normal? Will this disappear when I "finish" the deck? Do I need to cut these darker areas away?

It's not horrible looking but it is a lot darker than the adjacent wood.

Thanks...

Dave

Dave, nice lookin timber mate. I'll take if off yer hands to save you the trouble! :D

Seriously though, have a look at some of the wood bleaches. I have used plain old Caustic Soda with good results in getting water stains out of cedar in the past (diluted of course).

Teak decks generally clean wonderfully with Joy dish soap, TSP, oxalic acid, and many dedicated "teak cleaning" products on the shelves of your local chandlery, so I don't think you have any worries.

However, in an abundance of caution, why don't you test clean some spots before you either discard or use the stained areas.

The sides that were exposed darkened? Yes, of course, teak always does. Right after cutting it, didn't you see these beautiful, sometimes greenish or orange colors? Have you seen these on boats decks, after some exposition to air and sun?
Nothing to worry about, no acid, no whitener. These are not stains, but just the normal oxydation that occurs on most woods. On top of that, from what can be seen of the pictures, there might have beeen some humidity penetrating the wood, end grain, and accelerating the process.
Have a nice time building your boat.
