Ok, ATTENTION London correspondents!! Inasmuch as I now own a 1936 model MG TA roadster, I need a proper hat- probably 2- summer and winter. I should think good Irish tweed would do. I'll be in London next month, for the Remembrance days events, and much of that time I'll be right downtown on Oxford St at Marble Arch. Where do you suggest I go?

You'll want one of these. They are even available in 'Oxford' blue.

Martin, can you remember the three word german tagline for "The Avengers" - possibly something starting Melon?

I googled it - Chapeau Melon et Bottes de Cuir.

Not german and not three words. Just how wrong can I be?

Dale, right-click on that photo I posted.

In the window that opens, left-click on "properties."

In the window that opens, notice the web address near the middle? Just put in front of that and after it when you post it on the WBF.

Alan

P.S. To copy the web address, just drag your cursor over it while depressing the left-click. Then, right-click with your cursor toward the right side of the address and a window will open. In this window, left-click on "copy." You can then paste this into your WBF post... between and .

And Dale, in addition to what Alan said, you DO want both the http part and the www part (but make sure you don't end up with http://http:// when you paste the address into the Image dialog box here on the forum). With Image Station what it does seem like you have to be careful about is the other end. Sometimes it seems like there is something like orig.jpg tacked onto the end, and that you DON'T want.

Dale, I asked the same question twice way back when. To paraphrase Norms answer back to me..." now read my lips grasshopper" :D
.... click on the thumbnail in imagestation, right click the photo that comes up and copy the properties as they are. Then click the image button down there in the replies window and paste in the code.
That way you don't need to muck around removing the orig.jpeg off the end of the code.
PS. it has to be a cheesecutter. Or a WW1 leather pilots helmet a la Snoopy.

It's a bit of a stroll from Marble Arch, but the place you want to go is Lock's on St James' - they've been around a while - 1676 - and not only did they invent the bowler hat, they also made Nelson's hats, amongst others. They're on St James's St, here (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=529250&Y=180250&A=Y&Z=1)

I would suggest you might want a tweed cap. Something like this?

Or how about their "Bentley motoring cap"?

Wonderful hat shop in every way except one - really, really, really not cheap. Website here (http://www.jameslock.co.uk/), and address James Lock & Co. Ltd.,6 St. James's Street, London, SW1A 1EF

Lock's may have made the first bowler, but they didn't invent it.The idea came from Lord Coke who wanted a robust hat for his gamekeepers. The intention was that it should withstand a blow from a club.

Bond Street is nearest to Marble Arch and is full of expensive specialty shops.

Harvey Nichols is a posh department store to try at Knightsbridge next to Harrods. If you have money go to Harrods. If you are being budget conscious go to Selfridges. Selfridges is at the top of Oxford Street. Selfridges is still up market but more reasonably priced.

This info is courtesy of my wife Helen. Helen is a Londoner.

If you are driving in Central London on a daily basis, you are charged a congestion fee of eight pounds per day which is separate from paying parking fees. Helen was not impressed when driving in London ... good God, I'd take the tube.

Warren.

And if you are middle class, go to John Lewis, which is also in Oxford Street.

A day ticket, allowing you to go anywhere in London, on the Tube, is cheaper than a congestion charge payment for a car, even before you have parked the car. (Parking cars in London is something best left to diplomats and rock stars - saw Eric Clapton pouring coins into a meter to dock his Ferrari for an hour, off Bond Street, just last week!)

Lock's are the hatters to Royalty, the nobility and gentry, and may be relied upon for hats that are perfect in every way, but a good flat tweed cap, for driving or shooting, can be had in many places that clothe the Englishman of a certain age and type. I own a couple which I bought in my own small town. You should have change from £30 - but you certainly won't at Lock's.
