View Full Version : Procrastination... and other weird thoughts about perfekshun

Now after the last two days I got to wonderin as I uploaded the latest adventures...

I wondered why it was it took me sooooo flamin long to get something built?...

Was it that I wasnt prepared to put me name to something that was less than EXACTLY what I wanted?...

Was it that I was subconsciously afraid to take that single first step of actually cutting wood with the aim to complete it as soon as possible?...

Was it that my normally rather well hidden ego had jumped the que and didnt want to have to say look at this peice of rough as guts soon to be flowerbed thing I threw together?...

Or perhaps it was an irrational fear of rejection from me mates if I built and presented something less than what Id been yarnin and yearnin for all this time weve been aboard woodenboat.com forum as shipmates?

Was it that I did want a boat I just didnt want to make a flamin mistake with the one I built?

So exactly why did I procrastinate for almost 2 years on the forum and over 3 years all up before I got to the point of bein so fed up and soooo hungry to be on the water that nothing mattered any longer than to actually be on the water!!

Looking at boats built by other people was enjoyable but to buy one built by someone else terrified me so I stopped short of doing that

I looked at f****glass boats I looked at steel boats I even   looked at a couple of ferro ones! But in all something wasnt there...

Ohh ****e mates dont get me wrong here... there were some flamin bobby dazzlers among them alright... but I couldnt come at parting with me $$$ for one of them...

So Ive ended up so far with a rough as guts appallingly brightly painted future home for Azalias African Violets and Strawberries canoeythingy that set me back a whole $60 for the cheepest ply that I could find the rest of what was needed I already had... and Im rapt! over the moon! in bloody bliss!!... yeah yeah its rough as guts for sure its not something to write home about {well I have actually but we will keep quiet about that eh?!} its just a l3ft 10in ply and pine canoe that is nothin special no glass no epoxy nothing flash like that... she will almost assuredly become a flower garden in hopefully a couple of years...

But the sence of freedom its given me is beyond belief... the freedom to move without the constant company of the elbow crutch something that Ive had for over 11 years finally I can leave it in the car and take to my canoeythingy and just go...the sheer joyous freedom of that is increadible!

The freedom to explore the waterways around here... the freedom to wander at will wherever I wish to paddle there I be... The freedom to enjoy the birds the waterlife and the animals on shore being unfettered by noise and restrictions of movement just to glide by...

The freedom of this little 15 hours worth of effort is beyond anything Ive ever experienced previously... with that you have to understand where Ive come from over the last 11 years I honestly took the word of my physio that canoeing kayaking and sailing should be avoided a great dream but out of your {my} reality given your physical situation... freedom! to say "up yours sport Im doin what I love to hell with you!" Freedom to again be able to clearly consciously recognize that I make the decisions that affect my physical wellness not some physio or surgeon or doctor... me... Freedom to go for a paddle or the freedom to go for a sail freedom to wander on the water to enjoy what I had avoided... Freedom.

yeah its only been two days... but believe me these two days have been nothing short of wonderous to me... wonderment of why? wonderment of gawd stone the flamin crows I can do it! wonderment of the sheer beauty thats only viewed from a canoe {or kayak} on the water... wonderment of why did I take so long to get to this point?... wonderment of why did I ignore my mates for so long?... and wonderment of life without restrictions.

So I wonder why procrastination and the desire for perfekshun was so important it stiffled my enjoyment of freedom for soo long... I wonder at why I insisted to myself that I wouldnt accept anything short of a masterpeice for so long when a simple canoeythingy was enough for now...

As I write this Rodrequez is playin on the CD "I wonder... I wonder... I wonder I do" and I do wonder...

And I also wonder at how many others are doing just the same thing... procrastination and aiming for perfekshun in a first get me on the water boat instead of just getting out there... I personally reckon this things gonna make one hell of a moaning chair for the big build.. gets too much get a problem get the flamin canoeythingy and paddle!!

Anyway I was just wonderin... figured to share me thoughts

Now Dave... Im one hell of a happy chappy mate!... but why?? that one word is floating around in that mushy stuff floatin in me ol noggin... why??

Talk about lost time!! talk about lost fun!!... aahhh gawd I dont know mate but its just irritating me a bit to think I spent soooo long f***assin around aimin for perfekshun only... when I coulda been havin all this fun ages ago!!

Its not gonna plague me at all for very long... its just at this time the thought is irritating... like a itch yer cant scratch... Im wonderin why the heck we do these sorts of things to ourselves and how many others are doin just the same when they too could be havin a hoot while waiting for the build to happen...

I mean somethings better than nothing right??

I've always been a little disappointed with the quality of my boatbuiding efforts. But once I'm on the water, even in my crude little plywood boxes, the disappointment just disappears. I'm seldom happier. I see you've discovered that as well. It looks good on you, too.

Shane,

You've given voice to something most of us feel. Taking that first step is often the most difficult part of the journey.

But in future years when canoeythingy is keeping the Azaleas in, rather than keeping the water out, you and the hoons will have the pictures and the memories of your time together on the water in a boat you built.

Isn't that what it's all about?

:D

Well done!

HughGawd mate!! It wasnt blank paper it was soo full it was illegible indecipherable and totally confusing!! Im hopin by this one simple step the rest will get clearer... in fact it already has.

Too flamin right mates!! ...The road to the adventure is the most interesting one while the adventure itself is the culmination of the roads taken so becomes a part of the adventure itself eh wot?!

Yes John thats about it... exakatakally!

I shall plan me attack for the day on the chart and leave it with her goodself so she can just point out me intended route to the searchers {with the inclusion that "he could be wanderin around any number of little streams in there so just pull the lid of the roo stew and he will find you" and then no one looses anytime gettin the tucker to me!! :D

Quite the philosophical question Shane. To which I don't believe an answer can be given, because there is none. All good things come in good time to those that deserve them.

The way it were told me, King Neptune ,in his briney depths heard tell from a platypus that a funny looking fella', living in the land of Oz, kept dreaming of a floating log every night. This was hardly surprising as he would spend the most ungodly hours perched in front of his very own personal computer logged onto the most improbable site in cyber-space - the Wooden Boat Forum!

The fella's wife too, seeing him panting and drooling at the screen, soon developed her own obsessions...and just who was this "Wee Lassie" that sent him the e-mail and what plans did she have for her husband she wondered?

Drawings and schema of boats of all shapes and sizes would come to him from other boat dreamers, some even from far away on the other side of the world. He would study them as though his very life depended on it, scratching his beard all the while. Each one seemed a thing of beauty and worthy of the time and effort required to bring it to life. "Yes, that's the one!" he would exclaim, upon receiving a new plan. Though, after a while, no one in the house bothered to even raise an eyebrow anymore. "Schooner or ketch dad?" was the nonchalant reply from his daughters. "Or a pinesi" said the son in an attempt at a ribald joke. At that, he would put down his plans and give them the look. It was a gentle, fatherly sort of look where he would tilt his head forward and close his eyes slightly. With this he implied that there were greater powers at work in this decision, and that he would gratefully suffer the chidings of his family, for they too had a hand in his fate, even if unknowingly.

Still, after he fiddled and faddled, hemmed and hawed, a year passed, and then another. Yet he had'nt made up his mind on what boat to build, which by now was so full of plans that he could'nt even decide what to have for breakfast!

He did'nt have to eventually, for Nature being kind and for the fella' being a son of the soil, it was decided for him. The moment came when a copse of giant trees which stood by the side of his house, came crashing down at his feet. With a mighty "whump" they landed, and the shock from each landing went from the ground straight up to his head, and knocked some sense into it.

Shortly thereafter, without a plan in sight, he took his tools with a vengeance to the nearest bit of wood to hand. With all the devotion and intensity of a whirling dervish, a form began to evolve which quickly suggested that a boat was about to be born.

So, one fine morning, under a bright blue sky, his children came out of the house to find their father asleep in the very first boat that he had ever built in his life. "Wonder what he'll call that canoe-thingy?" one of them said.

Thanks for the great yarns Jerry and Shane. smile.gif smile.gif My first boat was five foam roofing panels stacked one on top of the other. Freedom! And at twelve years old! Turtle collecting for the day followed by a pipe full of Cherry Blend and thoughts of the neighborhood girls. Ahh... to be twelve again. Happens every time I get in my boat.

As I said I was sorta wondering how many people out there are doin as I was... I guess I was tryin to gee them up a bit... you know without saying it saying... "just do something!"

All that reading was worthwhile all that learning was worthwhile all the yarning was worthwhile and all that thinking was worthwhile... but till I sat me bum in canoeythingy I was just dithering

Another amazin thing happened today... I was just startin to make inroads into a couple of possumpoops mountain of a list of honey do's when the old fella over the road knocked on the door "Gidday Shane mate ow yer goin?"... now this is one of those old fellas that dont say much and keep to themselves getting more than a gidday outta this fella was like steppin on cactus... "yep mate Im good and you?" "yer fine look I knows yer back an necks buggared but yer were lookin like yer gettin a bit better the other day with that ply yer were bashin around... made a boat I see eh?" "yer mate a canoe" "hoons'll love at eh?" "yer mate its a rip snorter"... now as I said this is a fella whos normally quieter then a dugong at low tide stuck on the reef...

But today he seemed to want to spit something out just couldnt get it over his tongue "well mate yer been fishin lately?" I asked "well Shane I aint been lately but ats wha I wanned ta talk ter yer about mate"... "yer?"... "well its a woodenboat mate" ... mmm would be easier pullin teeth from a chook with this fella I can tell yer!! :D ..."A mate of mines got this woodenboat an seein as yer seem ta be wantin to have a wooden boat I thoughts yer might wan it?"... mmmm now that was an innerestin comment and me earoles perked right up!... "yer well mate it would sorta depend eh?"... "yer I reckon it would" ... that was it!! The buggar started to wander down the drive way headin back to his place!!! ****e!!...

"Oi!! mate whatcher on about?" I calls out and he looks back up the driveway at me "well if yer wants a woodenboat I knows were theres one yer could probably get fer under a grand nothin special mind yer will prolly ave ter rip off and replace all the ply on the top bit but shes got a 60 hp outboard and shes licenced and the trailer is too" of course me ears picked up!! of course me hairs on the back of me neck stood on end!!... of course I was flamin interested!! I mean do fish c**p in water? does the sun shine? strewth I was innerested all right!

"mate now come on out with it where is it?" he hummed and haaaed about havin to get some dozer moved this arvo but after that he could pick me up and take me to "ave a gander... if yer want of course"... of course?? do fish c**p in water etc etc

So anyways he eventually gets back and theres the knock on the door but no one there and in rushes Beth "Dad the old fella over the road was just here and said to get yer bum into the car if yer wanna see some old boat... something like that.. anyway hes out there waitin" So I off like a bungarra on heat out to his car and away we go... about 5 streets away! coulda flamin walked quicker!! tongue.gif and as we drive in theres three boats in the yard one on a trailer not to bad lookin at least everything appears okay another smaller dinghy sized so that cant be it and the one on the ground next to an empty boat trailer

I sorta did a bit of a back step seein the boat on the ground and the trailer empty right next to it but thought okay so maybe theres some reason for this we will see... so the old fella who owns the boat comes out of the shed come house and gallops over I mean this fella didnt walk he seemed to rush all at once then stop dead in his tracks... amazin... anyway the boat had a tarp over her so we took that off and I stood back and went "mmmmmm" as my mind reeled and screamed in pain for the poor baby layin there!!!

Okay her deck was nackered totally water had got into the ply and she was stuffed.. the motor was where the two old fellas were hangin around as if I was or should have been really interested in that large hunk of metal when... anyway I leant over into the cockpit and looked at the ply that formed the floor and mates it was so waterlogged it crumpled in me fingers... this was about when I started wondering where the fibreglass was on this thing!... nope none! ply and paint screws and glue that was it... canoeythingy was in good company it would seem!

Okay so I lifted the boards that made up the floor to have a gander at the bilge... water met me eyes leaf litter like me mulcher would love to have a go at... so taking out me small screwdriver that Id whacked into me pocket before I left home I started poking at the frames and funnily but not surprisingly the blade sunk into the bilge frames all the way {about an inch and a half} no worries at all! soaked... nackered... okay so that can be fixed I guess... looked at the "control panel" nothing! not a bloody thing the wheel was the steering wheel from an old Holden car middle emblem still afixed... no forward controls although the bracket was in place only holes in the ply for guages soo okay hows the rot around here? screwdriver test proved this was the same as the floor... so okay now the motor

The motor was an old 60hp Johnson ...really old... does it work? no battery no fuel just the motor... cant start it to see but the old fella from across the road took the lid of her to show her gizzards and most of the electrical leads were bare wire... nope she would short at the first chance... but thats fixable if I was mechanical which I aint motors and I have severe avoidance training under our belts... but anyway I looked at the timber of the transom and outboard bracket area a few gentle taps out with screwdriver a few gentle pokes told the same story as the frames floor and bilge told...

mmmm so talk turkey time... "okay down to brass tacks mate ow much yer wantin for er?" I ask both old guys look at each other and to his credit the old fella from across the road stepped back and sat down and from here on stayed well out of it ... even though it was pretty clear the other fella wanted his help he just sat back and muttered "thas yer boat mate thas yer job" so he wrings his hands a few times and then says "mate I cant let er go fer less than 400 thas wha she owes me" I took that figure as a lump of salt and wandered back along the sides not commenting at all as I looked her over... "shes licensed an tha trailers licensed too" he says Im now at the bow lookin at an obvious previous patch "shes got sweet lines" he says and that statement startled me "sweet lines"?? mmmmm innerestin I thought to meself wonder where he heard that but he was right she did have sweet lines a lovely flare forward and a nice wide beam but was she worth $400?

Emotionally sure was... reality nope... I couldnt even tell if the flamin motor worked! but then the trailer may be worth the cash... the entire ply hull deck and transom would be trashed and most if not all the frames would also go... Id maybe end up with a motor that may or may not work and a trailer that had been home built so may or may not have any value...

Her name? appropriately enough it was "undecided!" and so was I... but he also had an old landrover which as bush bashers I love so I asked how much he wanted for her 2000!! strewth a bigger bucket of rust Ive not seen! EVER! again no battery so no idea if it would run probably is my guess and she was licensed but 2000??? ****e!... anyway I told the old fella Id have to cogitate on it and get back to him... so thats what I have done told possumpoop which of course is the very worst thing to do and got the answer I fully expected "If yer gets that peice of crap yerve just descibed and stick it on my yard it would be the end!! what the bloody ell do yer want with a flamin power boat yer blithering flamin idiot?? yer into sailboats!!!" and of course she was right

but still 400?? and I could probably offer him 200 and get it... but would my zip zip auto 1.5ltr lancer tow the flamin thing?!! doubtfull so then what about the land rover? 2000 is way way too much for it so maybe if I offer the old fella a grand for both that may work?? trouble is I know Id probably feel guilty offering 1400 less than his price...

Anyway it was amazin in that boats seem to be coming my way now... now hopefully someone will offer me a nice sail boat for a rediculously low price "in need of love" and then Id jump at it

What a day!!

I wondered why it was it took me sooooo flamin long to get something built?...
We've been wondering that for years! :D

Build a fleet of small boats and your large family will have more fun together than they would in the huge cruiser you were originally looking for when you came here to the forum.

And I hope you have a pretty absoflaminlutly great excuse for not bringing the digital camera along when you went to look at an old wooden boat!

Keep 'em comin' Shane. It sure wouldn't be the same here without you. :D

Ah Shane...
about that old boat um can you say twice the work for half the result compaired to starting from scratch? maybe just maybe if you wanted to built a new one and needed old papers to lower the taxes but a fleet of thingys for your famly might be funner. serously to answer the question you started with. their are so many day to day things that just get in the way. I did an extra days paper deliver this am ( the gal that I contract my route from splits it into 5 week days and 1 weekend days so that people do not burn out going hundereds days straight then quit. personally the longest streach I ever did at a job was on a golf course 72 days straight one off then 54 more and the year was gone) then I sold plasma and then intended to go mow. but the wind blew and the gal that I sub for had to go to the bank and said she would be right back ... 55 minutes later she woke me from where i had fallen asleep so I went home and slept then it was take the wife out to anaversery dinner and rent some movies and suddenly its 9 pm and now after midnight and we are wondering why we are still awake. to marrow church and getting there over an hour early just to get a seat for stake confrance because the # 3 man in the church is speaking . just little things and the weekend is almost gone with out a boat built or even a job done to bring in money to pay for the boat. time runs faster and faster

StevenActually Steven mate... I dont!!! I just bolted and by the time I realized and muttered something about wanting to go back and get it the old fella gave me a real pained and rather furious glare and roared "ah aint interested in no fancy damned flamin cameras were lookin at a boat yer wanna flamin boat or not eh?"... well I shut up! no arguin for this fella just show me da boat!

But it was the same again today  ... we shot up to Freo again for a couple of soccer matches {Tiff and Joshy} and there is this huge flamin Eytie {Italian in Aussie} Barque in and guess which drongo forgot the ruddy flamin mongrel camera AGAIN??!~!! yep me... no excuses just dumb memory and this week is about shot before it begins so getting back up there for a gander may be pushin the friendship a bit with possumpoop...

mind you Im tempted to shoot up there with the boys anyway at some time cause I did notice a couple of US Navy ships docked... theres even one with folded winged planes on deck and the number 64 on the side of that tower thing they have... but the place was like a tic conference at a roo farm with people everywhere and traffic snarls like Ive only seen on films of NY!! But wouldnt mind getting back up {with the camera this time} and goin for a wander boys would love it! Aaron exspecially  ...

Now RI mate Ive got a question for yer... you say.. "My sneakers(Chuck "T"'s}..." I gotta ask... Why the flamin eck have yer got Chucks sneakers on??? Gawd just the thought of that terrifies me!! you just never know where theyve been after hes worn em!! :D

Jerry is a great yarner when he arcs up!... and soooo inside me head its a damned horror movie! If I wasnt so schytszoid id be worried but hey whats another voice in me noggin? gawd its almost a riot in there as it is one more from HK aint gonna worry it... just wish he wasnt quite so flamin acurate!!... I wouldnt mind if he took the opportunity to give us a yarn about HK and his boat whats happening whats he done to her {pics would be handy too!!} whats happened to the old fella at the yard that was under lock and key some forclosure court action If memory serves Jerry? I reckon that would be a great read meself!

Hugh mate I aint gettin it!! Ive been given the drum by her lovliness the mighty possumpoop controller of the fates that dictate everything and anything in Kaos Kingdom that if that... and I do quote her high loveliness here... "peice of crap lands in me garden or anywhere near it you can buggar of to Thailand to give Chuck a hand with his boat and forget comin back... dont get it and you can come home again!" ...HA!!! Little witch that she be threatens me? The mighty Dingo?? mmmm well okay shes smaller than me okay shes tiny in fact but man that woman whoooeee can she make a dictum that ol Queen Victoria would be proud of! :D ... so mate as I do inten comin home again the boat stays where its at!!

Mate I actually decided {yeah again after a yarn with her loveliness the mighty possumpoop} that as I do honestly have a real avoidance problem along with total memory avoidance syndrome to motorology and the art of mechanical knowledge retention combined with a severe allergy to motors and outboards bein motors theyre included here I need to focus on that which makes me smile and that means sail or paddle... now if I can just figure a way to get the best of both worlds Id be raptured!! goodenuff!

seafox... like people seem wont to say to me often enough... I didnt get a single word of that but Im sure it was something increadibly enlightening ;) ... maybe its the accent again?? mmmm??? yous fellas do confuse the buggary out of me now and then this bein one of those times... the last thing I understood mate was "their are so many day to day things that just get in the way" beyond that yer lost me!

And your right... life has a way of gettin in the way and changing the direction one thinks they should be travelling in... family in particular have a massive effect here... but I mean this has surprised the eck out of me just how simple it was and how much fun its been since... and now the anticipation and motivation to move forward is massive... I think thats what I was gettin at the sheer simplicity of keepin the first build simple easy and fast well 15 hours is not fast in my book I buggarised around a fair bit and the hoons got in the way a few times possumpoop and her flamin continual "honey dos" affected me a lot and the flamin ruddy mongrel phone just wouldnt give up!! I mean id ignore it and it would ring out then 2 seconds later some idiot would ring again avoid it and it rings out again then on the third Id think maybe someone REALLY wants to have a yarn with me about something important so Id answer it "Id Brie home" "Is Beth home?" Is Tiff home?" and on then there were the dopey buggars that call and say "Hello there Im from the cool and cozy insulation company and were doin a survey and you could win a car just by talking with me today would you like to win a car? sure you would so could you answer just a few questions will only take a few minutes of your time I know your busy but just a few min..." click... you know them sorta interuptions!... but quick enough to be rough and ready and able to be wet and not fill with water... aahhh sometimes I just wonder is all wonder I do!

Ironmule Im gonna catch up and beat yer!!!... yer know that dont yer? just wait an see ifn I dont!!... I gots orders out me bum an thats just me hoons so yer buggared before I start mate!... of course I gotta get started on em and stop fiddlefaddlin around with sails and such with this one... and theres the wee lassies to do... and theres these flamin trees layin around waitin to be sawn and then theres the boatshed to be builded and then... aaahhhh eck maybe not!! HA!!!

aaahhh well if some of the lurkers who are livin with procrastinashun disorder are readin this and my posts on the canoeythingy... To those fellas and sheilas some people wouldnt but I would recommend a cheep quick and fast build get on the water and see where you go then!!... Im still figurein that one out but its a hell of a lot more fun doin it on the water than in yer head!!...

Time is short really and lets live it!! perfecksun is impossible to attain we can only strive for it and like a baby that aims for perfekshun to walk those first steps are the hardest but once done and over its onwards and upwards!!

Enjoy yer day fellas!!

And did you see the picture of the Leavitt in the current issue? It's in an article about the boat replica movement.

And, now that you've built a simple boat, make the next one a little fancier, a little more complex.Hey, how about a Wee Lassie? Just the ticket! :D

Dingo, the rot sounds so pronounced could I suggest CPES and Fill-it, :D .

You will get there, ... the first 1,000 hours are the hardest.

A garden bed!, A GARDEN BED ?, MY KINGDOM FOR A GARDEN BED?! ... ... DONE.

Warren.

ps, I had a visit from the extremely youthful Tony Hunt today. He is just a sprogget (a sprogget is a young fella). Dingo we are conspiring over CPES and Fill-it, ...it's kill rot juice, ... beware. Has your new canoe got dry rot yet ? ... look very closely.

I don't know about Chuck's boots but Chuck T.'s is short for Chuck Taylor who was a basketball star way before my time.He endorsed Converse All-star sneakers and just about every one(born before 1965) has owned a pair or two through the years ,up here anyway. They are the ones made of canvas(probably sail material).Nowadays sneakers are made out of flubber and you need compressed air to make them fit right and if you don't pay more than $150.00 a pair the sproggets won't wear them. You can still get chuck T's for about $25.00.They work as a decent deck shoe too.The cameras on the out so I can't give you a visual. :D Dan L.

Would live there in a pinch... actually a couple of years back we almost got transfered and had the choice of either Launceston or Hobart... was ready too by Cripes mostly packed and all files sorted at the office here when a semi decided to mate up the muffler with the camry I was driving which put a sudden and emphatic halt on the plans ...But you get bloody cold down there dontcha thermal undies and such!! ...Mind here when we had a bit of a gander at properties there were a few we fell totally in love with... sigh never mind.

Fulsomely??? sounds rather like buxomly eh?! :D fulsome?? me??!! ooohh mate your a worry!!

But your right... were havin a ball and now the hoons are back at school and work guess whos gonna be doin the solo dance??? HA!! well once the honey dos gets done and the trees are sliced up into more managable slabs and sizes {Tomorrow!! yeeeeflaminhaaa!!} and the fence goes up and the boatshed is up an... yer gets the idea eh?? But I often manage to escape from the lovely possumpoop and gets to do me own thing for a bit!!

Wassa mate Im mad as hell but not totally insane!! I mean I love me possumpoop and well I dont wanna be stuck with something like that when its not anything like what I want at the end of the day... why waste time effort and money on something that you are not interested in? If I knew someone around here who was into these sorts of boats Id go show em but me? nope not gonna have a war with the mighty possumpoop for no flamin power boat thats buggared!! ...A sail boat now that would present another problem altogether and a war I would and am prepared to wage with the gorgeous one but sigh... lifes like that!! always the one yer dont want that comes along temptin yer eh?!

About the canoeythingy and rot of any sort... I aint lookin!!! ...an if I see any I will chuck some more paint at it!! HA!! ...No way am I so flamin ferniketty with paint as yer are mate bung it on and get goin is a wonderful feelin with this baby!! ...now comes a bit better degree of boat and your gonna get inundated with emails quizzin yer about this and that but for now... bung it on cover any and all blemished of which there are masses and get goin... whistle the fear of her bum fallin out as yer paddle along!! :D
