Dubya?... from what I can figure is the "W" in George W Bush... "dubya" bein the southern manner of sayin W... sorta the implication I think of which is his bein a bit of a dumbass texass hick which could be right given some of his dumbass southern hick comments since he came to power

sorta like sayin in your dumbest US accent {visions of Gomer Pile here ;) } "Gooooolleeee Whyah ahm Geeorge Dubya Boosh shure hick ah ahm"

I guess even Americans got sick of calling him George and him ignorin them bush and him ignoring them mr pres and him ignorin them so they just got ta sayin Dubya an now hes maybe takin notice tongue.gif

But then I coulda had all that wrong after all it was given me by a Texarsian... mmm or was that a Canadian?... danged ifn ah nos pardner coulda bin one of them thar varmits elseways I mighta jist made it up! nah not me!! ;) Nope I really think thats the reasons for Dubya gettin called Dubya an not all those other unprintable names hes been gettin from everywhere lately

Now I advise yer to..... duck!!! :D

Dang it all Greg! I was purdy dangeded close by gar ;)

"Dubya" resembles the pronunciation, by Americans from the southeastern part of the country, of the letter "W". This "southern" accent, and other mannerisms and customs of the region, are often used to make fun of them. They also lost the American Civil War ;)

"W" pronounced "dub-ya" My father and his family have lovely low country Southern brogue and the sounds of the letters are soft, a touch slow and melodic.
I don't call him that, though - I call him President Bush smile.gif

His father is George Herbert Walker Bush (George), the President is George Walker Bush (no junior as some insist) and his nephew is George Prescott Bush ("P" he's referred to by the family.)

We Southerners do tend to carry our names all through the family, resulting in nicknames.

My great grandfather was James (Ozzie) he had 2 sons named James (J.O. and Shorty), my father is James (Jim) and my brother is James (Jay). Our cousin is James (Jamie), my 2nd cousin is James (Jimmy) and my son is Jay (derivation of James). See what I mean, Shane :D

Lucky, I think the confusion lays in the fact that Eurasians are used to kingdoms, so 'dubya' sounds like a ceremony - 'I hereby DUB YA The President'. Things aren't done that way in the new world so in the absence of royalty the president of the USA is actually elected, though some say falsely, not dubbed. :D

There's a Southern accent
Where I come from.
The locals call it "Country".
The Yankees call it... --Tom Petty

In Maine there is a long tradition of incest, nicknaming and using girls names for boys, which from a cultural anthropoligist's perspective, makes a lot of sense.

George is not a girl's name but the dubbya hits two out of three. Nicknaming incest children was done to distinguish cousins from brothers and fathers etc.

Where the dubbya family has had a multi-generational modified clam shack on Walker's Point in Souther Maine, this is likely the case.

It is said, that on the trip to New Haven to college, the dubbya made a rebellious declaration and changed his name from the shortened version, "the dub" to the now well known version so to fit in with the other inbreds.

Chris, I'm not sure I follow much of that.

I do know of a man with woman's name, but the context was a (malicious) joke (by his dad) about him having long hair when in high school. Some how, "Cynthia" stuck.

I suspect that common "traditions" of incest are far in the past. With our coastline, movement in small boats isn't hard. I think problems in Appalachia are more recent.

Dan,
Sort of like the dubbya making a case for unilateral invasion and occupation of a soverign country, I took a couple of liberties in explaining the origins of the dubbya's nickname.
And to follow in the steps of our trusted commander, I expect you to believe it and I'm sticking to the story.

There is, by the way, a Walker's point and the only shack on this point belongs to the family of dubbya and the W comes from name Walker so which is it?
Did the name Walker get stuck on the family or did it get stuck on the geographical location?
Is there and has there been much incest along the coast and the islands of Maine?

Lots of information to put together there. I think it adds up to my conclusions, just as dubbya's stuff added up to invasion.
I think my data is more reliable than his.

Walker was one of Prescot Bush's partners back before and during WW II (the nazi collaborator years). I don't know if it was Prescot or his son that married into the family.

Walker was one of Prescot Bush's partners What kind of partner?
Did they marry in Massachusetts before the two states split? Before this kind of marriage was legal in Mass.?
