I have access to an A.R. True carvel-planked hull. Buy-in is $800, but I do not have the skill, time, or resources at the moment for decent restoration. I would like to hold onto hull until school is out (June 2006), and then perhaps start fitting out. I thought about seeing what The Apprenticeshop could do with it, but I wanted some input from The Forum.
In addition, I googled all combinations of A.R. True/ "Rocket", which I think is sitership which actually got built. I am waiting for a few articles from MAIB, but otherwise, I've got bupkiss! Anyone out there ever heard of this guy? This boat? Have an opinion as to how I may proceed? I want to obtain wooden sailboat, and save one from the chipper at the same time. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards-

There is a 1955-23' A R True rocket in www.woodenboatrescuefoundation.org (http://www.woodenboatrescuefoundation.org) for free. It is located in Maryland.

Thanks for reply. I am looking at a hull of AR True Rocket. The gentleman is letting it go for $800. I would like to finish it, which is why I'm looking for info. I am interested in talking to anyone with info about this boat, and about possible resources avail. to save it. I am in Portland, Maine and have already put a call into The Apprenticeshop over at Atlantic Challenge. Any other info would be appreciated- Let's see if we can save this hull ands do something with it. Thanks-

True Rockets were nice little boats. If you do save this boat, I have some never used sails for it. I teach the repair course at WB school, and we take boats into the class for repairs. Especially if the owner takes the course. If you're interested contact Rich or Kim at WB.

I used to see a True Rockets around Long Island Sound. Why anyone would would want this ugly little boat I cannot guess. A rocket it was not.

Seems like you could find a number of other boats that could do the same thing much better and look good while doing it.

AHP- I am far from good looking, yet other have seen potential in me and saved from an uncertain fate. I thought it wasn't about looking good necessarily, nor going fast. I thought the whole point of WoodenBoat was restoration, salvation, and the future of wooden boatbuilding. I thought it was about caring for wooden boats , rather than chucking them into the chipper?! I simply don't want to see an intact/complete hull go to waste. I am starting classes at The Landing School tomorrow morning, and seller is leaving state in 2 weeks. I really cannot afford time/money resources until at least next June. I'd like to take on this project, but I can't let it get in the way of my program at TLS. In addition, I am once again a student, and I'm not making any dough on my good looks! I don't want to try to half-ass it, nor low ball some poor boatbuilder. Any usefull info would be appreciated.

I will also try Bill or Kim at WBS. I was up there last summer, and met with both of them. They are good people, and hopefully they can provide a lead or help. Take care, and thanks-

NETTLE.---WAY TO GO. IT IS ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY. UGLY TO SOME IS BEUTY TO OTHERS, AGE OLD SUBJECDT FOR PHYLOSOPHERS.

i HAVE A VERY "UGLY" BOAT HERE AND i THINK IT IS MUCH MORED INTERESTING THAN THE SPARK AND STEVES i HAVE TOO.

i HAVE LEARNED THAT IT IS NOT A GREAT IDEA TO TRY AND SAVE EACH WOODEN BOAT YOU ENCOUNTER. IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL ACTUALLY FIND YOU HURT MORE THAN YOU SAVE. TAKE A BOAT WHEN YOUR READY AND THE ONE YOU REALLY LIKE, OTHERS THAT COME YOUR WAY CAN BE HELPED INTO HANDS BY YOU BUT DO NOT TAKE THEM PERSONALLY.

YOU WILL FIND THE GOOD BOAT FOR YOURSELF ANY TIME, IT JUST HAPPENS.

BY THE WAY IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHERE ALL THIS SAGELY ADVICE COMES FROM---THIS IS BRUCE ELFSTROM AND I RUN THE WOODEN BOAT RESCUE FOUNDATOIN. I STARTED WBRF NOT ONLY TO SAVE BOATS, BUT ALSO TO STOP MYSELF FROM TAKING THEM PERSONALLY! smile.gif
CHEERS AND I ENVY YOUR STARTING "SCHOOL."

DROP ME A LINE WHEN YOU’ER READY AND WE WILL FIND A BOAT YOU LOVE.
