Criminal prosecution for a politicin lying?

There's an interesting situation developing in one of our state parliaments where a recommendation has been made by an independent enquiry that a member should be charged under criminal proceedings for LYING to a parliamentary committee. The charge carries a possible 7 year sentence.
A politician charged for lying? Sent to jail? What a precedent! They'd have to hold sittings there as 90% of them would be inside. Just think how that principle would effect your legislatures!
(Principle, now there's a word to use in the same sentence as politician)

Not practical. The justice system would grind to a halt because of all the perpetrators. And politicains being what they are the recidivism rate would add to the collapse.
