I've just finished building a vertical linisher, for tools sharpening and general metal work.It will use 2" (50mm) wide x 6'4" (2000mm)belts. They're fairly expensive, around $7 each and I have quite a lot of 50mm wide strip abrasive available in various grits.
Does anyone have a method of satisfactorarly joining abrasive to make a belt ?

When I was in college in the late 60's, I worked the night shift in the sanding dept. of a furniture factory. We made belts this way.
Cut the ends of the material at matching angles.
(maybe 30 deg.? don't remember for sure)
Remove about 1/2" of the grit from one of the ends. We had a grinder that we ran them thru but a file or a coarse whet stone may work.
We glued them together with hot hide glue. Just spread a little on the cleaned end and clamp for a few minutes. I'm not sure what you could substitute for the glue. Hot melt polyurethane?
