View Full Version : Comedians from the South
Trying to remember a comedian from 20 or more years ago. He was a southern guy and did comedy kinda in the Southern Baptist style.
Any help?

"Knock him out Johnnnnnnn!"
"Just shoot up here amongst us. One of us has got to have some relief!"
"What's that racket in the back of class? Oh, that's Marcelle. He's idleing, when he grows up he wants to be a log truck."
Here is a link to some audio samples of Clower.

Jerry Clower. Hilarious, very funny man. Played football at Mississippi State.
Marcel Ledbetter! Great stuff.

As I think about it, I think it was Clovis that wanted to be a log truck. Yep, very funny stuff.
I expect everyone here to listen to the clips at the last link I posted above.
It is worth your time.

My favorite southern comedien has got to be Tim Wilson. Clever jokes. Great songs. A regular on the Bob and Tom morning radio show.
"Church League!
Softball!
Fist Fight!"

I don't know if I've heard of him. Did you listen to some of the Clower clips?

I'm pretty sure I played some Tim Wilson clips for you last time we were together, Chad.
"Jeff Gordon is Gay"
"39 things every man ought to know",(A virgin don't never drive a Z-28...) etc.
Somebody gave me a Ron White CD the other day. Too funny.
But Jerry Clowers was in a class by himself. Proving once again that "clean" and "funny" can co-exist. Talk about your narrow paths, though...

Yes, he played football at Mississippi State, and if I recall correctly he never played high school football.
In one of his routines he spoke of walking onto the field to try out at State. The coach asked him, "What position do you play?". He replied, "I am the one what runs with the ball".
HHHAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW!!!

.
I used to bass fish with the state game warden for Yazoo County, Ms. His back fence abutted Jerry Clower's back yard in Yazoo City.
We came back from night fishing about 8 one Sat. morning and saw him out mowing the lawn in his shorts. My friend took me over and introduce me and we had a short chat. He talks and acts the same in person as he does on stage. Though he doesn't try to be funny, he sure has a mighty long list of "Southern sayings" that'll keep you grinnin'. ;)
We had a state law enforcement conference the following October and Jerry Clower was the guest speaker/entertainer....he really is funny ! :D
"Yazoo County?" That must be where the famous zero-turning radius lawnmower came from. Fantastic machine! The one I drove had a ~45" cut, and you could trim around a dime with it.
