View Full Version : Keelbolts to excite the few

I couldn't believe it! I was able to not only find the bottom of the bolts in the lead but was able to extract my first two keelbolts. Could hardly contain myself with the ease of pushing them up through with a bottle jack under them. The excitement waned a bit when I attempted the third and the nut is frozen with corrosion. Ah well, about 18 more to go.
Thought I'd share an update to my progress with DragonFly. Between summer holidays and keeping the tarps in one piece I haven't had much progress other than getting the deck removed and getting ready to drop the ballast off.
Sorry, no pictures. Maybe next time, forgot to take the camera.

I certainly can understand your excitement. I'm not familiar with your project though. What are you working on?

Concordia, thanks for adding those threads, should have put in a bit about the project. It's always on the top of the brain for me so hey why ain't it on everyone elses?
I mean it's not like I'm the only one now is it? LOL
It's a Malibar Jr design. Plan #324-E I believe if I can remember correctly. It's cold molded using Juniper and has lead instead of iron for the ballast, along with some lead pigs under the v-berth.
Having to restore most of the boat, almost to the hull as there has been considerable damage from neglect with rain being the main culprit. She has been filled up to the top of the main cabin berths at least once.
Thanks, DragonFly
Sounds like you're off to a good start. However, a word of caution. Don't be so quick or boisterous to celebrate the ease at which some of your keel bolts are removed. Your actions may inadvertantly draw the attention and subsequent wrath of the Keel Bolt Gods. Wait until the job is complete before you celebrate, if you can.
