CSI -Vegas
CSI- Miami
CSI - NYC
NCIS
Grays Anatomy
Crossing Jordan
I haven't seen more dead bodies while Im trying to have dinner in my life. Now I admit I like CSI Vegas & NYC can't stand Miami. I also like NCIS. But man the corpse so realistic in all close up details. I remember Quincy, ME you hardly ever even saw the dead body. Lots of death on TV these days. Uh oh I;m starting to sound like Ish :D

I have a problem with all of those shows for the exact reason you mention. It is a shame that people need that kind of graphic detail for entertainment.
A few years ago, I was feeling pretentious and read a bunch of "literature", i.e, stuff written a long time ago. The stuff isn't even mildly interesting compared to today's authors. I think it is because of a TV mentality. In order for an author to compete with TV, they have really got to spell it out for the reader.
For example, I read Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. Okay book but not even remotely frightening. Not like watching the Exorcist. In fact, they made a version of it that was supposed to be true to the book (I think DeNiro played the monster) but they apparently embellished some of the scenes so they could keep up with Friday the 13th. Just killing someone (even a child) isnt's scary anymore.
I also read Moby Dick, the obligatory Mark Twain books, Treasure Island, and Robinson Crusoe. I found that I had to get myself in the right mood to enjoy them, i.e., dumb down my expectations, or otherwise, dare I say, they would be boring. I think I am affected by watching too many movies and too much TV. I don't know if it is a good thing or not.
To contrast, I recently read some more modern novels, Roots and Shogun, and could not put them down because they were so compelling.

Good discussion. And it shows we're all different. As for me, scary mean stuff, folks getting killed, you can keep it. I hate to even watch the ones with disfunctional folks yelling at their kids. You can also forget anything where someone is getting conned or an animal is at risk - real life on Animal Planet or movies.
But CSI and their ilk are one of the few things I do watch. Guess it seems like the damage is already done and it's about solving the mystery (graphic as it may be)

I'm with you Condordia.
Trying to solve the mystery is the interesting part of the show. The graphic gore is overdone and I more or less ignore it.
What creeps me out is psychological horror.
There is an older movie with Roddy McDowell called "The legend of Hell House" or something similar. Very spooky, you never actually see anything. Its all in your head. I can think of another example called "The Haunting", filmed in B&W. Real creepy. Again, you never actually see anything. Just alot of noises ,great music and cinematography.
Any other thoughts??

Furthermore, has everyone seen the movie "Grim Prarie Tales". Two guys telling stories by the campfire. One tells three, the other tells one. The three are monsters and nightmares. The one is a man who goes along with a lynching in order to fit in in the new town. I find the one to be the creapiest.

There was that movie "Blair Witch Project" which I never saw but was apparently successful (and very scary) because of its lack of special effects.

Hitchcock was scary because of what he DIDN'T show. The Cohen bros. did one years ago called "Blood Simple" in the Hitchcock style. Very scary IMHO.

My two favorite shows...
AFV
Boston Legal
They make me laugh.
I also rarely miss "24", so I get a little "Bang Bang" in my visual diet.

Nip/Tuck gets pretty morbid sometimes. See the one about the guy who loved a dead woman so much he kept her head in his refrigerator?
