Hey there. We bought an older boat made from Fenwick Williams' Annie design. It was cheap for a reason and so there is a lot of rebuilding in my future. The house will have to be replaced, as will the deck, and when I was looking around, I heard that FCW had changed the house in later plans to give more inside headroom. I think he also extended it forward some. Is it true that this is the design that Rarus is based on? I have a set of the old, unmodified plans. Does anyone know if modified ones exist, or will I just have to make it up?
I know that there was an Annie based in New Zealand that had done away with the cockpit and just had deck back there with deckboxes to sit on. They had a double berth underneath and used the rest of the boat for living space. Anyone know anything about this? I read about it in an old issue of Classic Boat, but haven't been able to find any more info. Thanks for any and all leads you can give me! smile.gif

Buildergirl,
the boat you're thinking of is in Tasmania .Her name is "Madoc" and her owner/builder is Mick Seeney. There is a wooden boat association in Tassy ( I think )and he should be contactable though it .Perhaps Shamus ,who is often a participant on this forum, could help you. He lives in Tasmania .Lovely boat.

Hello All

My boat “Otter” is a 12.5% enlargement of the Woodenboat plan for the 21’2” Double Ender by J.G.Alden which was actually done Fenwick Williams when he worked in the JGA office. She is a very close cousin to “Annie”, and having looked at both sets of lines I’m sure one is a direct enlargement/reduction of the other. Otter is built pretty close to the WB plans so looks very much like the one in the WB plans online catalogue, although the enlargement gives her a very husky look, such that many folk think she’s 28’ or more feet, when actually she’s a smidgen under 24’ Annie (in my opinion) has the same husky profile.

I think that Annie would easily stand a house that gave 6’ headroom under the hatch, without spoiling the aesthetics.

One thing to consider in this design is the height above the waterline of the cockpit floor. Otter’s is way too low, it floods at about 4 knots due to the tendency this hull form has to “draw down” as speed increases. Going really fast (6.5 knots) we can reduce the aft freeboard to less than 6”. This sounds a bit alarming but isn’t as it is also a product of the quarter-wave she pulls up. To counter it we simply plug the cockpit drains with soft “outward” removed bungs so that if the cockpit is filled by a sea the weight of water will free the bungs (we have very large drains on Otter, 2 1/4”).

The second thing is my original plans show a considerable rake or slope aft of the cockpit combings, and this is how they got built on Otter. It looks good but is very impractical as they are not comfortable to sit on due to the slope. I would ensure that any combings you consider are able to be sat on right forward at the house (both width and slope).

I have the Classic Boat mag with the article on the Tazzie Annie somewhere and could scan it if all else fails for distribution via email.

Cheers - Foster

Thanks, everyone, for the info. I will follow up those leads and see where they take me. I sort of discovered this forum by mistake when I was searching for something else, but I have the feeling that it is going to be an invaluable source of information! smile.gif

Did someone say RARUS?

:D

Whatcha need?

Yes. Fenwick modified the plans for ANNIE to create RARUS. She has an elevated and elongated cabintop / house. The increased height of the cabinsides required the increased height of the bulwarks to compensate and keep things proportional. There is no longer a space between the forward end of the cabintop and the main mast for a dinghy. The cokcpit is much larger than the original because, with the bulwarks, there is no cockpit coaming, so the cockpit goes to the bulwarks (which make convenient backrests).

Im 6'4" and can stand upright below between cabintop frames forward, and anywhere aft. Berths 6'-3" I beleive. I have copies of the modified plans, but not the originals. I have lots of original drafting done by Fenwick for certain details, though (such as cabintop framing) - talk about a pleasant surprise.

She carries similar sail area, displacement, etc... identical hull, only different in deck and interior layout. RARUS' rigging was modified to carry a bit more sail and more variety of sails.

Let me know what else you need. I've been meaning to make copies of the originals, to set the originals aside for safe keeping...
