How about an opinion on whether or not a black bootstripe will look good on light gray topsides where the plank lines have been v-ed to accentuate them. Form a mental image...does it look right or proper?

Sure does sound good. You could go with a very dark blue (Endeavor Blue) or a very dark green (black/green) as well. The purpose of a boot stripe is to provide a dark band at the waterline so grease and gunk that floats on top of the water won't stain white topsides. Sort of a reverse bathtub ring preventer. Bootlines should be very dark. However, it is often best to coordinate the bootline color with the rest of the boat's trim color. A black sail cover wouldn't stand up well to the sun and wouldn't be as nice on the inside of your cowl vents as would a dark blue or dark green.

Do a photoshop pic up and see how you like it.

Jmac,
Right or proper,if you don't mind a military look? Navy small craft are painted that combination. ;)

Ouch! The Kirby's pale green might be the answer too.
