View Full Version : Question about Yanmar Diesels

My new 'family' boat arrived from the manufacturer, and it has a Yanmar 75HP turbo diesel in it.. a thing of beauty, to be sure, but since I've only owned Westerbekes before, this is a bit unfamiliar to me... maybe someone can answer a few questions:

1) The engine is equipped with both a remote water separator filter, as well as an engine mounted fuel filter. The remote filter, unlike every other boat I've owned, is NOT a Racor or Groco unit.. this one is painted silver, has no plastic bowl at the bottom, and seems to have a knurled drain knob at the bottom. Does anyone know if this could be a Yanmar product? In the position it is mounted, I can't read the label...

2) The engine mounted fuel filter appears to have some sort of priming pump on the top, which a quick read of the engine manual tells me is used to bleed the system after a filter change... can anyone describe how this is used?

3) Unlike the Westerbekes in my previous boats, the oil pan drain was fitted with a hose, making it fairly easy to suck out the used oil via the hose. This Yanmar doesn't appear to have a drain hose... which I presume means that I'll have to suck out the oil via the dipstick. Has anyone ever attached a separate drain hose to the oil pan plug fitting? If so, do you recall the correct fitting size?

Thanks

Mike, I've always used a Jabsco portable oil change pump, the kind mounted on top of a 5 gallon bucket, and it has worked quite well... on the Westerbekes, I merely slide the intake tube into the supplied hose attached to the drain plug. I could do the same down the dipstick tube, but for some reason, in the Westerbekes, I wasn't able to get as much of the oil out.

Maybe this isn't the optimal solution, but my Universal Diesel has a permanently mounted tube coming out of the oil pan. It has a bronze screw fitting on the end of it. I leave it hanging "up" when I'm not changing the oil. When it comes time to change the oil, I unhook the tube and hang it into the bilge. I then put a gallon milk jug down in the bilge and put the tube in and open the screw fitting. I come back in 10 minutes and all the oil is in jug.

It works very well, and there are no pumps to deal with, and only one small bronze screw fitting.

Noah, what you describe was precisely what the Westerbekes I've owned had... but in my previous boats, there was no place deep enough to let the oil drain by gravity. The Jabsco portable pump worked fine.

I'd like to install the jabsco pump permanently, if I could figure out what size fitting is required, and if I could reach the drain plug to change the fitting. Since I've only spent a few hours on this new boat, I'm still not sure if it is possible.

Here's a great site for Yanmars. I rebuilt a 3GM30 for my H28 and received lots of help. Check out the forum.
