View Full Version : Rebuilt / Reconditioned Diesels
I'm looking to replace a 1966 Volvo MD2B diesel in my 35 ft sailboat and am looking at reconditioned engines since the cost of a new one at £3000 for 20 hp here in the UK is a bit steep.
People say Diesels run for ever -- is there any reason to avoid a dealer reconditioned one? Any thing I should look for aside from brand / hours on the original, etc.
Thanks
John

Hi John,
Have'nt checked the market today but you Pound is approximately 2.2x our Canadian $ putting your new 20 HP diesel marine engine at about 6,600 Cdn $, which is pretty well the going price here.
What worries you with a rebuild?
I suppose I could sail the boat over and have the engine installed there <smile>.
I'm actually leaning toward a rebuilt engine -- because if it is only a few years old it should run for another 10. That said some have said if you go through the expense, put in a new one.
John
Look for an engine from a reputable rebuilder or from a manufacturer-appointed rebuilder. Both should offer at least a year warranty, and should supply a work order describing what parts were replaced and what machining was done.
