A New York Times story:

Scott Kelly Spent a Year in Orbit. His Body Is Not Quite the Same

It's a long story, too long to reproduce here, but it's worth the read.

Let’s see, a year long manned mission to Mars exposes a person to 450 times more radiation than on Earth. Yeah, makes a lot of sense to build a manned outpost on Mars.

from the article:

Dr. Topol, of the Scripps institute, found the implications of Mr. Kelly’s experience to be grim.

“The main conclusion I got from this paper, based on all the objective data, is why would anybody want to go to Mars or be in space?” he said. “Because this is really scary.”

It has been said, and I think they are right, that if you advertise a one-way flight to Mars you will have volunteers lined up down the street and around the corner.

Not me!

Once machine intelligence evolves I could see a machine “manned” outpost on Mars making sense otherwise the energy expenditure to launch and protect human bodies so far away from Earth limiting.
