I have some movies on my camera that are in the mov format. I need to some free downloadable software that will allow me to edit the movies for length and make them smaller files that would be more web friendly. Last time I used a free copy of WinAVI video convertor and I wasn't that happy with it.

Can anyone point me to what I'm looking for in the next hour or so?

How about Windows Media Encoder?

it's not free, but I belive the "pro" version of Apple's Quicktime does what you need.

edited to add: Apple has versions for both Macintosh and Windows.

I'm downloading the Windows Media Encoder as we speak and I will see what it does.

Chad...you may need to convert from .mov to .avi before you can edit.

RAD Video Tools ("") is free, and will do the conversion.

It appears that the media encoder only opens wme files. I'll try that other link.

Even with 100% compression, the avi files are at least twice the size of the mov files.

Windows Media Encoder can access all these:

.wav, .wma, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .mpg, .mp3, .bmp, and .jpg.

WME I'm not sure about. It talks about doing a screen capture and I'm not sure what that is about.

I want to be able to open a mov file and convert and compress it to something that is web friendly.

I looked at the Movie maker software that came with my computer and it looks like it will do the trick. It allows you to pick a target file size and does the conversion to that size.

I'll work on it after my meeting this morning.
