Hello from a novice builder, and first time user of the forum. Wondering peoples opinion on using tammarack on such parts as keels, frames , deck beams, etc. I am building a Haven 12 1/2 and it seems here in New Brunswick Canada it is used a lot,as white oak seems to be hard to get. Any thoughts on where I can use this and where I definetly should not use it?
You will likely get different opinions on this, but the larch is one wood you could well use for the whole boat. For planking and keel you need to note pith location and potential twist in the timber.
I'll echo Thad on this one. The only complaints I know od about tamarack is inability to get large timbers and twisty grain, neither of which should be a problem with your small boat project. Have at it.
