Like most others the scrap metal business is all about supply and demand. For a few years they were CHARGING to take scrap steel, but paying for cast iron. A couple of months ago I checked the prices and they were paying $78 per 1000 for steel. The only metal which seems to be somewhat stable is aluminum. The steel and cast market is dependant of what the Aisian countries are looking for and if the exporters have a boat load ready for the next expected ship.

I got $22 for my '76 Toyota Corona back in '89. They said they'd give me $22 per 100#. It was a shame really. The clutch was going and the fenders flapped in the breeze, and we'd beaten the $h!t out of it for kicks when we realized it was going to the junk yard. We left it in just good enough shape to drive it there. But that 22R with about 110k on it was still running strong when I walked away from it.

I bought a pizza with the proceeds.

DanSold the white gold wedding ring from my first marriage (brief, abysmal) for scrap - and likewise got enough to buy a pizza. Shared the pizza with my current spouse ... and 16 years later, we're still sharing pizzas ...
