Them weren't 'yachtsmen'. Them were commercial fishermen. Salmon gillnetting, I imagine. Boat #69... probably from the CRPA fleet. Recent immigrants from places like Finland, Sweden, Yugoslavia, etc. They didn't care what it looked like.

Nope, a common method of reducing sail in a small spritsail. Just unship the sprit and tie down the peak.

A honest technique to slow the boat down. I employ the same tried ways when I race, it lets photographers chose not to take photos and makes my less inquisitive competitors feel good about themselves.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum has one similar on display - a reproduction they commissioned. Or - if you want to see an original unrestored version - they have one in the non-public 'archives'. Our 'Coots' group get a guided tour that warehouse every winter. This year it'll be Feb. 22. Come join us.
