The anniversary of Armistice Day 1918 has particular significance as anniversaries do. Not celebration, commemoration of those lives truncated so violently, and those lost to disease in the same conflict, and those lost to mental trauma and wounds in the years before the next iteration of the same conflict.

They are not forgotten. The shadows still stretch out.

Lest we forget.

and i can't help but wonder oh willy mcbride
do all those who lie here know why they died
did you really believe them when they told you the cause
did you really believe that this war would end wars
well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
the killing and dying it was all done in vain
oh willy mcbride it all happened again
and again, and again, and again, and again

In American history, and I say that not to take anything away from other nations, there are two wars where the technology so outstripped the military thinking that the loss of life exceeded anything that can be understood with hindsight. One is the American Civil War and the other is World War I.

I heard it said that your Potus during the 1910's was a child during your civil war and remembered the carnage. Consequently he wanted to keep the US out of what he saw as an European civil war.

Wilson had seen the frightfulness of war. He was born in Virginia in 1856, the son of a Presbyterian minister who during the Civil War was a pastor in Augusta, Georgia, and during Reconstruction a professor in the charred city of Columbia, South Carolina.
