It is interesting how one boat project begets another. I an in the process of finishing what turned out to be a complete rebuild on an early plywood 16 ft Garvey when along unannounced came a free Westerbeke. A co-worker was cleaning out his garage and asked if I would want an Engine and Trans that was taken out of his sailboat 10 years+ ago.

I want and looked at it today and it is complete and has been out of the weather in a dry garage for 10 years. He took it out after he started getting sea water the oil (the result of overheating). He said it ran well when it was taken out and had fewer than 1200 hours.

Looking at the thing and a few schematics, I am figuring that it probably has either a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

I have been looking for a new boat project and thought it might be an omen that WB 170 arrived in the mail with the article about Harry Bryan's small displacement powerboats the same week as my co-worker offered me this engine.

Anyone have any experiences with rebuilding or operating sea water cooled single cylender Westerbeke Diesels? Also, what do folks think about Bryan's small displacement hull powerboats?

Steve

Is there an oil cooler on it? a leak in that may be the problem.

Warped head is also a possibility, although a slight one as it's not an aluminum head. Who decided that was a good idea ought to be stuffed with nails.... ;)

I have the motor now and I have begun dissassembly. Everything is pretty well frozen up so things are going a bit slow as I am trying to minimize the number of easyouts I need / break. Before I started work on it I checked the compression and was getting about 260# with a rapid bleed down. I can not tell if that is from a sticking valve or from the leaking head/gasket/I can't even guess. more to follow.
