So he built this instead in 1955

1955 Hagemann GMC Special

Ladder frame
Jaguar Mk VII front and rear suspension
Four wheel disc brakes
GMC straight six 302 truck motor
moss 4 speed
aluminium body
originally red, but painted green because so me people asked, "is that a ferrari?"

It is a shame they didn't keep the GMC engine, they were very good performers for their time.
A "square" engine, 4"x4", aftermarket cross flow heads were available, they were king of the oval dirt track racing for a while, and I remember seeing pictures of them in dragsters.
I wonder what the original engine configuration for that car was? (Hayward, Ca. was a hot rod mecca in those days)

edit; another of the same genre

Different oval...
Saturday night races, seems like every county fairgrounds had a track, they sort of just went away. (My dad used to take me back in the mid 1950's)

They lasted until the late 60's around where I grew up. It seemed a kinda run what ya brung for some of the classes, but they did have 6 cyl & V8 modified classes.

@ Paul: cool car - thx for posting it.

There is still a 1/4 mile dirt oval race track here at the fairgrounds!

The 1950 STOVEBOLT SPECIAL started with a GMC 6 but was "upgraded" to a V8 IN 1955.

They haven't completely gone away.yeah saturday night stock car racing on quarter and half mile tracks is still prevalent throughout the deep south

and sprints and midgets race throughout weeknights and weekends all over the midwest

the panhandle of florida used to have awesome winter oval racing series catering to both stock cars and open wheelers, wonder how the storm will affect that
