A hymn that we used to sing on religious retreats when I was a boy is "Morning has broken". I don't think that it is an old hymn but it was quite popular with Presbyterian back in the 1970's.

As a youngster, I liked Onward, Christian Soldiers. Now, about anything by Rev. John Wilkins and his three daughters. The Rolling Stones did a cover of his father's song Prodigal Son.

These days, it's one I'm learning. Written by Dylan for his gospel album... I've changed the refrain a bit to make it more of a political anthem. The stock refrain about serving someone is --

            "It might be the devil,
Or it might be the lord..."

I've mixed in some variations --

            "It might be some fascist,
            Or the memory of MLK..."

            "It might be some racist,
            Or the ghost of RFK..."

Natalie Cole does a sweet version as well but Amy Black is the one who showed me it's not just some weird Dylan squeak --

Dolly Parton - "I Am Ready" - not a hymn but a gospel song. Almost enough to make this atheist a believer...

I've always liked this one, often sung in UU congregations --

And my favorite UU hymn - 'Spirit of Life'. Didn't find a video that does it justice - but at least this one has the lyrics --

and my favorite old timey song of faith. I though of this one a lot when my parents died.

Several from Sweet Honey In The Rock.

Probably my fave is 'We Are' --
