Just for info. Hopeman, on the Moray Firth, is one of my local harbours.

There were lots.
As a postgraduate student of marine biology at Cambridge, my late father had a falling out with the skipper of the research vessel, over what the weather was going to do and the attractions of staying in the pub, so he got himself a Fishing Vessel Master's Certificate and used it to supplement his very meagre income (he told me he once spent ten days in the Lowestoft Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen on 2s 9d) by delivering surplus steam drifters to Portugal.IMAGINES VEL NON FUERINTComment

If you can find a copy of this book
Buy it. It sets out the story of building one, from felling the trees, to sea trials. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tree-Sea-Bu.../dp/0861380339It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

He was working at Lowestoft when this drifter was in build. The yard was on the north bank of Lake Lothing. It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Re: how many of these did there used to be
I suspect my grandfather sailed in one or more of those. The story is he started fishing in a lugger, but given how much he knew about steam by the time he gave it up and emigrated to Canada where he became a millwright, he probably spent a few years in a steam drifter. I wonder if any sailed out of Stornoway?Comment

If I remember correctly, the yard he was apprenticed at was Chambers of Oulton Broad.I have seen the Lydia Eva under steam a time or two and suspect the change to diesel made life easier on board.Comment

Looks like Para Handy would not be out of place aboard her.
Although he would prefer to be on the 'Vital Spark', "the smertest boat in the coastin' tred"
