Jesus was white, don't ya know? It just wouldn't do, to have Jesus be black.... or even just dark-skinned and swarthy, like most men in Biblical lands and times were. Hell, most depictions of Jesus have him even blue-eyed! :)

In 2001 forensic anthropologist Richard Neave created a model of a Galilean man for a BBC documentary, Son of God, working on the basis of an actual skull found in the region. He did not claim it was Jesus's face. It was simply meant to prompt people to consider Jesus as being a man of his time and place, since we are never told he looked distinctive.

Mr Neave and his team were also gifted Semite skulls from around the time that Jesus lived by Israeli archaeologists and Neave and co created X-ray “slices” of the skull to give a better feeling for his features.

His Jesus looks like this..

If that theory is correct it implies that there was no institutional memory of the appearance of Jesus 200 years out from his death. Which would not surprise me at all.

Well let's face it. When you are writing a biography you assume that your readers know what the fashion of the day is, and you will assume that it is unlikely to change.
Look at how long we have been wearing trousers with creases ironed in.

200 years out from his death the actual Jesus was likely becoming somewhat inconvenient, and anyhow once the Empire got hold of it everything changed.

That forensic reconstruction looks like my old Lebanese friend Nick in his 30's.

Twenty years would still be over 70 years off. The Gospel of John is thought to have been written over 90 years after Jesus' death. There are no contemporary accounts of Jesus' life, thus something written 100 years after his death would be like an account written today of a soldier in WWI, with no other recorded history available.

.

Anyone could do it, just make sh!t up, it's the editing that's important.

Several years ago I did a year's gig designing large scale stained glass windows. Some of these were for churches--these were a challenge since I am non-religious and it was tempting to cross the line and make Jesus look just a little bit Asian or Black, or even Middle-eastern.

Hang on, at home we had a picture of Jesus, he had blond wavey hair and blue eyes.
What are you saying.....
He wasn't Aryan?

But then, the Aryans were from Iran and India - so they weren't Aryan either.
