    Look ast the craftsmanship!

Some know I'm a fan of the classical guitars sold at Guitar Salon. The craftsmanship in some of the guitars is extraordinary.

This is from an Ennio Giovanetti guitar that was just listed and just sold. It's the heel cap. It's a small, fine detail, but done with extraordinary attention and perfection.

Also, sorry for the typo in the thread title. I do hate it when I do that.

Always fun to peek at Guitar Salon, I hadn’t in a while. I always look for something similar to my 1974 Manuel Contreras Sr. 1-A that I bought From him in Madrid. He didn’t speak English, I didn’t speak Spanish. I just walked in and said “La major” and he brought out three and I chose and we made a deal. It’s getting a little dusty hanging on the wall, I just don’t play it as much as I used to.

That cap is actually pretty easy compared to things like the rosette and binding, bracing work, carving off the lacquer to fit the bridge, but I'm sure everything is first rate.

I've seen video of how this is done and I'm reasonably I recall how it's done. You laminate sticks of wood together to form the desired pattern, then slice off pieces to use as inlay. Great technique!
I'll just take my chances with those salt water joys.

                Just so
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

The mitered purfling around the intarsia centre strip is quite tricky do well. This is very nice work.

The make the rosette that way, but if you look I think you'll find that the heel cap is not end grain.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

I suspect he's talking about the decorative center strip, which is carried over on the heel cap. That kind of banding is usually made with endgrain veneers (I do a lot of it).

Looks like Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia)...mostly plantation-grown and quite affordable. It's very uniform, and a pleasure to work.

This kind of craftsmanship makes me very jealous! I'd love to have the talent, but I don't think I'll live long enough to develop the skill.
