First, Kalpa Imperial by Angélica Gorodischer, translated from Spanish by Ursula K. LeGuin. (http://www.lcrw.net/kalpa/) A superb translation of a really amazing collection of stories by an Argentine author - sort of magical realism, sort of fantasy, sort of SF, not easily categorized, but delightful.
Second, Life As We Do Not Know It by Peter Ward. (http://www.penguinputnam.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,0_0670034584,00.html) This would be a really good one for SamF, if he's around. It's a really good review by an exobiologist of the current science on the origins of life, the creation of synthetic life, and the possibilities of life elsewhere in the solar system. The creation of synthetic organisms is a lot closer than I thought - in fact, if a virus is alive, we've done it already.
