We had started a thread about This Old Guitar, but it vanished, so here once again.

I was talking about the chord for This Old Guitar. They are

C G a e F & G7

First thing I noticted was that the a & e were lower case and wonder if that meant they were minors.

Second was the the F. I hate the Bar F and was asking about alternate fingering for the F. Mike mentioned about barring 1 & 2 and wrapping the thumb for 6.

I found another F fingering and wonder how it would work.

Chad the chord diagram shows Mikes "Barre 1,2 and thumb 5,6" without the thumb.

The important point is the "X" which means "DONT PLAY THESE STRINGS" - If you're not going to sound it, then you don't have to stop it.

P.S. the rules change for hi-gain electric.

That's the fingering I'm talkin about, Chad. You can play F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C# and D all the way to the 12th fret by moving that chord shape up the neck.

To add:

My thumb dampens the 5th and 6th strings.

Also the little a and e does not disignate a miner chord. I don't know why they tab it that way but it's not a minor. A minor will be written as Am, Bm etc.

Can you send me a snip of that song?

I see that now. When I first saw it I didn't look at it that close, just saw that it didn't have the bar. I hate bar chords.

You're gonna have to learn how to play the bar chords, Chad.

Too many songs use them.

Not only the ones I mentioned above but Bflat, B, C, Dflat, D, Eflat, E, F, Gflat and G using the other barre form.

Hey does anyone know if the lower case letters means that it is a minor?

No. I don't know why they're lower case but it doesn't designate a minor chord. A minor will be written as Am, Bm, Cm.... etc.

I started working on this song last night. I'm doing with finger picking. I'm adding my own little flavor to the picking.

I'm adding the pinch from the Travis picking style (base note and bottom string @ the same time) and than I pick down from the base note till I reach a total of 4 notes.

One of the things I've noticted about the picking styles I've seen is that they don't always pay attention to the 4/4 time. What I'm doing is giving each chord 4 distincte counts.

I'd still like to know what the song sounds like and who wrote it etc.

Mike, I found a sample clip (30 seconds) of This Old Guitar and sent it to you.

The song doesn't sound like it's in the key of C but I really can't tell too much by the clip.

That's one of the things so frustrating about music sometimes. He probably did that song in several different keys, whichever one suited his mood at the time.

What do you think about the fingering style I'm trying to use on it?

I'd have to hear you play it to make any judgement but fingerpicking is the way to go with that song.

What don't you pick at it a little and tell me what you think?

I need to bring a guitar to work and leave in my office for when I feel the urge.

I'll try it a little later Chad. I've got a few songs I'm trying to learn for the next show in a week.

I'd have to go buy a John Denver CD to learn it and Sue is ALREADY pissed about the money I've been spending lately. :(
