Re: A scary place to be !
Peter the OP is the Borgland Dolphin, which I worked on during a major refit in Bergen. Thankfully in dry dock; -25, night shift, lots of herring. Good times. I inspected probably 1000 meters of weld on that rig, in the lower legs and pontoons, 6 months before that video was taken.
I have some some general video of sea conditions between Shetland and Norway, shot aboard various rigs, particularly interesting to me considering where my boat sailed. I'll post some, stand by.
In the mean time, look at 'massive wave hits Dunbar' , YouTube.Comment

SD card with videos on it is at my brothers... will grab it in a few days and post those vids then.
I was on N sea rigs for 4 years, although I cannot say it with accuracy, I estimate the average wind speed for the time I was there was about 30 knots. Or so it seemed. I was always conscious of the wind speed because you cannot climb in over 25, so always had an eye on it.
A brisk February breeze.

These impressive pictures made me wonder; how does the amount of wave energy passing one of these rigs compare to the energy they extract in oil?Comment
