The past few weeks have been hectic doing a few things that I wanted to get done before winter sets in. Some things have to get done in the proper order to prevent unnecessary work and aggravation later, things like scrapping, sanding, preserving, varnishing, sanding, varnishing, sanding, you know the routine. The last coat of varnish was 2 days ago with temps in the 20's F.

The section I wanted to get done now was in the interior stern of the boat, because I had something just waiting to be installed.

So today the other tasks were complete and it was time to install the iron jib.
The old reliable Kubota got put to use doing the initial lift.

But to get it off the tractor and down into the boat I needed a means to do this in a semi controlled way instead of just dumping the engine out of the bucket, so another of the preparations was installing an overhead hoist. I used a pair of barn door tracks, 4 trolleys to go with the track and a pair of pieces of angle iron welded to a cross piece of pipe. I chained the come-along to the pipe and hooked the other end to the lifting chain on the engine.

So after a careful check of everything I proceeded to move the engine, my friend Bob was all excited about helping to put it in the boat.

Once the engine was close to the final position we removed the skid and lowered onto the engine bearers.

Got to love it when a major operation goes according to plan. The power plant is a Beta Marine based on a 50 hp Kubota engine.

Beautiful photo documentation. I installed a 10 HP Saab in a cutter I built, used skids and a comealong to get it from the ground onto the deck, then put a block and tackle into a luckily positioned overhead tree branch. After testing the weight of the motor on the branch I lowered it onto the bed.

Gotta' love that "Yankee Ingenuity" ! :D

Looks like you did a perfect job of putting it in the boat; now to get it lined up, neh ? ;)

Good work Ken and best of luck with the rest.

Brilliant work - I had to rely on a couple of the local oyster farmers - they came alongside with their barge and lifted the motors out (and back later on) through the doors - then we did the rest inside with an engine crane (wheels removed).

Dunno about varnishing in 20F though?
