JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — A Northern pygmy owl that flew into a window a couple of weeks ago in northwest Wyoming has been nursed back to health and released back into the wild.

The tiny bird, about the same weight as half an apple, was treated for a head injury by staff at the Teton Raptor Center in Jackson Hole.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports (http://www.jhnewsandguide.com/this_just_in/pygmy-owl-released-after-treatment-for-head-injury/article_ac10919e-5579-56f2-b314-04eedb485acf.html) that the owl was released last week after showing it could hunt live prey, fly without tiring easily and show a healthy fear of humans.

Northern pygmy owls are diurnal animals, meaning they hunt during the day and are susceptible to window strikes.

In 2017, Teton Raptor Center staff and volunteers treated 120 injured, ill or orphaned raptors.

Oversize eyes always equate to cute. Just ask Margarete Keene.

Well, I think he's cute. I doubt a mouse or vole would agree...

We get them here all the time, and the Barred Owls too. They make the Stellers Jays and Whiskey Jacks go nuts!

went to the Auburn Raptor center bird show 2 weeks ago. they brought a screech owl that was that small, and yes it was adorable. the Barn/ghost owl they brought was not so cute. in fact, it would scare the bejeesus out of me if i ran into it at night.

fun fact i learned about owls that i never knew.... they have silent wing flap and fly around making no noise. they put the microphone up while the owls flapped around and you heard nothing. then when they had the other raptors up there they did the same thing and they were LOUD by comparison. he said it had something to do with the structure of the feathers on their wings.

They make wing noise when you're in a deer stand, camouflaged, and move when they are about three feet away from landing on your head, and they start flying backwards.
